What does it mean for an app to "spoof the wi-fi provider"?
<https://i.postimg.cc/pdf8prL4/screenshot03.jpg> Spoof Wi-Fi Provider

I was comparing Lexa to an app that Steve had suggested recently where I
noticed that Lexa has the option to "Spoof the wi-fi provider = on/off".

What does "spoof wi-fi provider" even mean?

The only explanation in the app for why you might want to set it is:
"Mandatory for spoofing Viber and some other apps"

I guess that's fine (I don't use Viber though) but why I'm asking the
question is maybe one of you has a known use for "spoof wifi provider".

Did you ever need to "spoof your wi-fi provider"?
How did you do that?

And why?
--
A google search found plenty of articles on spoofing Wi-Fi to make an app
"think" it's on cellular (when it's really on Wi-Fi) but not the provider.
*[Q] Make apps think you're using Wifi*

<https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/q-spoof-a-wifi-connection-solved.1260914/>

That search also found articles on spoofing an access point which is
different in that it's simply using the same name as a hotspot SSID.

This is likely closer to the point, somehow, of spoofing wifi vs gps.

Without doing online research, this sounds like where hackers spoof a
wifi hotspot by using an SSID for their device that looks like a legit
wifi hotspot. Say the hacker goes to Starbucks and has their wifi
device spoof an SSID of "StarbucksWiFi". Users in that area will
probably think it is offered by Starbucks for use by their customers. I
suppose the hacker could even use the same SSID as for the legit
Starbucks wifi hotspot.

I've never spoofed anything. Don't know what the Lexa (if the URL were
provided to make sure I looked at the right one) does, or the
unidentified one from Steve, nor used Viber. I've never felt the need
to steal from others, or forge them, or lie about my location, etc. I
suppose if I planned on committing a crime, or circumvent restrictions
to which I agreed when using a service, that maybe I'd check into this,
um, stuff.

I think it means when you're on cellular the app thinks you're on wi-fi.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chylek.adam.fakewifi&hl=en_US&gl=US

It creates fake NetworkInfo and WifiManager objects that make other apps
think they are using a WiFi even when your device is connected by other
means to the internet.

When would you need that? I use it for HBO GO in my Android media box that
has ethernet connectivity but the app ignores it. You might want to use it
with other VOD or music streaming services that won't choose the highest
quality over metered connections.
