If you run the SeeYou Navigator app on an Android phone, can it receive
data (GPS, FLARM) via WiFi? Or can it only receive it via Bluetooth?
(Only Bluetooth is mentioned on the Naviter web site.)

I tried it out on a friend's phone with SeeYou Navigator installed, and
it said "scanning for devices" for a while and didn't come up with
anything. On the same phone I also tried XCsoar instead of SeeYou
Navigator and it could get data via WiFi (UDP).

You need a special BT Dongle from Naviter to connect via Bluetooth .

.... Because they encrypt the data?

I have a Rotax 915iS powering my home built gyro plane. I can get the
download/analysis software for free, but I need a $300 cable to connect
the engine ECU to my computer. You'd think that for a $40K+ engine
they'd toss in the cable.

Navigator can use the phone GPS. The dongle transmits GPS and vario from selected instruments. Flarm data is at an as of yet unannounced point in the future; so I'm hanging on to my Oudie 2 which displays Flarm targets in a substantially more visible way than the run of the mill itty bitty Flarm displays.

The folks designing these displays are kids out of university who don't yet need bifocals.

Navigator is very much a bleeding edge work in progress and is getting better all the time.

I assume that cable is for the Oudie? Or perhaps it is for the devices
sending the data? I'm talking about the Navigator software running on
an Android phone instead. The phone has both Bluetooth and WiFi
capability built in. Navigator reports searching for external devices,
but not finding any. In my experiment there were no Bluetooth devices
to be found, but there was a device offering data via WiFi, which XCsoar
on the same phone had no trouble receiving.

The posting in this thread from George Haeh says that "Navigator can use
the phone GPS. The dongle transmits GPS and vario from selected
instruments. Flarm data is at an as of yet unannounced point in the
future." - not clear whether WiFi is, or will be, an option. I guess
this will be revealed over time.

Oudie 2 is connected by cable.

Navigator uses Bluetooth to the dongle without a cable for data. You may want a cable for power.
