So I have heard from other sources of a figure of around 10 billion
for chickens.

Basic questions.

What is the average life span of a chicken? Is it less than one year?

If I see a number concerning chickens, is that the number of chickens
produced in a year for food, or is that the total number of chickens on
Earth at any one time? Is it feasible that the two numbers could be
vastly different?

I started being interested in a similar question concerning mammals.

I couldn't find anything in a web search concerning total numbers of
mammals. Rats and mice I am thinking are generic terms for more than
the brown rat, the black rat, and the house mouse, and there are other
rodents like squirrels.

Are there a much greater number of individual mammals on Earth than
birds or are they similar? Does the house mouse outnumber humans or
visa versa?

I am thinking the referenced article says total number. Each species
times the total number of organisms in that species added together.

If accurate, that is a really small number when you think about it.

The article seems to list the house sparrow as the most common species
of bird at 1.6 billion, but I am thinking it is not including chickens
in the study.

As for mammals, a few web surfs seem to come up with:

cattle - 1.5 billion
pigs - 1 billion
sheep - 1 billion
goats - 850 million
dogs - 900 million
cats - 600 million

But I haven't been able to find much on rodents.

That's because they're sneaky and like to screw.

Apparently it is not possible to estimate the total rodent population,
but it is estimated to be 40% of all combined mammals.
If one could only add up all the mammals...
But that would require a labcoat and good quality German binoculars.
Oh, and a pair of wading boots.
And a filled lunchbox.
Oh, and also a surfboard.
And don't forget the lucky penny squished into an oval shape
you got last year on that trip to the museum.
