Is anyone thinking this has some similarities?
The Soviets in Russia did not like a neighboring
country not following their lead.

from
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet%E2%80%93Afghan_War

"The Soviet–Afghan War (1979–1989) was a conflict wherein
insurgent groups known collectively as the Mujahideen, as well
as smaller Marxist–Leninist–Maoist groups, fought a nine-year
guerrilla war against the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan
(DRA) and the Soviet Army throughout the 1980s, mostly in the
Afghan countryside. ----
The UN General Assembly passed a resolution protesting the
Soviet intervention by a vote of 104 (for) to 18 (against),
with 18 abstentions ---"
Supposedly
"Casualties and losses
Soviet forces:
14,453 killed (total) or
9,500 killed in combat[41]
4,000 died from wounds[41]
1,000 died from disease and accidents[41]
53,753 wounded[41]
264 missing[citation needed]
451 aircraft (including 333 helicopters)
147 tanks
1,314 IFV/APCs
433 artillery guns and mortars
11,369 cargo and fuel tanker trucks
(Soviet estimate)
26,000 killed including 3,000 officers[42] (other sources)"

A Couple of the causes of Soviet withdraw after 10 years:

"The Soviets didn't have enough men to fight a counter-insurgency war
(COIN),[245] and their troops were not motivated. The peak number of
Soviet troops during the war was 115,000. The bulk of these troops were
conscripts, which led to poor combat performance in their Motor-Rifle
Formations. --
The concept of a "war of national liberation" against a Soviet-sponsored
"revolutionary" regime was so alien to the Soviet dogma, the leadership
could not "come to grips" with it. This led to, among other things, a
suppression by the Soviet media for several years of the truth how bad
the war was going, which caused a backlash when it was unable to hide it
further.[245]"
