Hi,
I will be heading to the Swiss / German area in the Sept/Oct timeframe
and want to do some flying in the scenic areas over there. I would be
flying dual, so not worried about license requirements.
I was hoping that someone might have some suggestions as to
friendly commercial gliderports that cater to out of town folk.
Any thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Try the Wasserkuppe! Apart from anything else, its where sport gliding
started.

There's accommodation, food and drink on the top alongside the gliding
school, or the excellent Fulda Quelle in Obernhausen (about half-way up
the hill) and an excellent gliding museum.

You can fly with the gliding school there (After a look at my log book and
license and a check ride in an ASK 21, they sent me off in an ASK23).

Scleicher's factory is in the nearest town to the bottom of the hill,
which is about 100km east of Cologne.

This is a link to all the gliding clubs in Switzerland (unfortunately only in German or French,
however Google Translate may help)

Most Clubs offer Dual Rides but many only at the weekends, for a Flight in the Alps
Shaenis may be best as they also operate Gliding Courses on Weekdays and if you
contact them by e-mail from their Website you may be able to arrange a few days flying
in their new Arcus 2 , same may be possible in Sion.

Wasserkuppe is full of history. Pretty much aero tow only. I've flown there a couple times. The Deutsche Alpen Segelflug Schule Unterwössen (DASSU) is a great place to fly in the eastern German Alps. I've flown there several times. They have a neat electric winch.

I think you'd have a good experience at either. DASSU is closer to Switzerland. I'm pretty confident you'll find adequate English skills at either, though I've always flown in German. I've got a DASSU video on YouTube if you go look for LTCTerry2006.

There's a couple of regional aerobatic groups in southern Germany if interested.
