during Northern Ireland’s decades of sectarian violence is not compliant
with human rights, a judge in Belfast has ruled.

The British government’s Legacy and Reconciliation Bill, passed in
September, stops most prosecutions for alleged killings by armed groups and
British soldiers during “the Troubles” – the period in Northern Ireland
from the 1960s to the 1990s during more than 3,500 people died.

The law has been widely opposed by people in Northern Ireland, as critics
say it shuts down access to justice for victims and survivors.

Ruling on Wednesday in a legal challenge brought by victims and their
families, Justice Adrian Colton said the law’s provision for conditional
immunity from prosecution breaches the European Convention on Human Rights.

The judge also said the law will not contribute to peace in Northern
Ireland.

“There is no evidence that the granting of immunity under the act will in
any way contribute to reconciliation in Northern Ireland; indeed the
evidence is to the contrary,” he said at Belfast High Court.

“It progressively got worse and after a point they were trying to stop it,
but it just overwhelmed them,” the site’s union organiser, Steve Ackerman,
said.

Transport for NSW said on Friday afternoon “work to remediate the site has
already commenced”.

Firefighters and specialist crews responded to a triple zero call at 6.30am
on Friday and evacuated 20 workers from the office block and tunnel
construction site. All of the workers were unharmed.

Fire and Rescue NSW is continuing to monitor for further ground and
building movements. The response coordinator, Mat Sigmund, said the
sinkhole has not grown since Friday morning and looks unlikely to widen.

“At this stage, we haven’t really detected any kind of movement to be
concerned about,” he said.

All roads and footpaths around the office block remain open but authorities
are encouraging people to avoid the area. An exclusion zone is in place
immediately surrounding the sinkhole."
