Got on tracfone's chat to ask for unlock codes, they referred me to some
"expert" for a buck, but then I get alert from bank they tried to charge $46
instead. Reported as fraud. Is there a legit way to save this tracfon or is
it junk?

Depends on the model, the carrier it's locked to, the date it was made
active on the network, and the length of time it was active on the network.

If it was purchased after Verizon bought Tracfone, and it's on the
Verizon network, then you can get the unlock codes after 60 days. If it
was before Verizon bought Tracfone then it's one year before you can get
it unlocked. There are some third-party unlock services that can unlock
some Android Tracfone devices, either via an unlock code or by remotely
connecting to a computer that the phone is connected to via USB.

Probably not worth spending much money unlocking a Tracfone device.

talked to the expert at all?

Why even post here, with zero details about the phone model, the network
it is (or was) active on, or when it was purchased? The ability to
unlock it is highly dependent on those factors.

You did not talk to Tracfone, you talked to a scammer.

Tracfone seems to have had a federal judgement against them on unlocks
where they agreed to unlock anything active over a year, mine was 3 months.

Phones purchased prior to the Verizon acquisition can be unlocked after
12 months of paid service.

Phones purchased after the Verizon acquisition can be unlocked 60 days

Thanks, I knew Verizon was somehow involved and that somehow the decline in
service after May was probably their switching to 5G. Which is why I stopped
renewing in August. I just couldn't figure out how 4G LTE tracfone was on
CDMA Verizon. Acquisition: Sep 2020 - Nov 2021. So I got this phone on
4Jan22. Thanks much. Very useful.

Now, if only I can get their attention.
