Pretty easy to set up simply, but then there are a *lot* of features
even on the free version you should take a look at.

There has never been a version of Thunderbird for Android. Mozilla
acquiried K9Mail to rebrand as "Thunderbird" on Android. Have you
looked at K9Mail? What Android e-mail clients have you looked at so
far? Yet looked at Bluemail? I use Microsoft Outlook (yep, on Android)
for my e-mail client on my phone. How about the Gmail app that comes
bundled on Android phones?

Do you really know what features you are looking for that K9Mail lacks?

You ask in an Android newsgroup, so I gave alternatives on that
platform. If you want alternatives on whatever is your "PC" which
doesn't state the OS (Windows, Linux, other) then you should ask in
newsgroups that discuss that OS.

Note: Thunderbird is a multi-protocol client on Windows (if that is your
"PC" OS). It supports e-mail protocols (POP, IMAP, SMTP) and netnews
protocol (NNTP). None of the Android e-mail clients support NNTP.
You'll have to find a separate newsreader for Android, and the choices
are poor.

I've searched quite a bit, but can't find any statement one way or the
other as to whether the proposed k9/Thunderbird android app will support
NNTP or not. Has anyone seen anything definitive on this?

My ladyfriend had K9. At some point that was a problem.
I don't remember why. I found Nine for her. She likes it.
I don't do email on cellphones so I don't have any opinion
about it myself. I'm not sure how much she uses it. I think
she mostly checks them as IMAP on her phone but then
answers on her computer, where it's set up as POP3 and
set to delete from server. So she only gets email on her
cellphone that she hasn't yet read on the computer.

I agree it's unlikely especially given the lack of alternatives may
indicate what appears to be a lack of demand for Android newsreaders.

On the original question, K-9 and FairMail are seemingly well supported, as
are dedicated apps such as ProtonMail and Tutanota.

I have no experience with some of the others such as Nine which is time
limited in functionality after two weeks.

I have tried most/all android clients.
I settled on 'email' by Edison, but I'm inclined to use myMail as it
handles images slightly better despite having ads.

If by that you mean Usenet then there is no email client that does that
on android AFAIK.
I use free News Groups app. Less than ideal, but it works.

Yes, that means no Usenet. This protocol is not implemented. Usenet is
so unimportant in the meantime that developers use their time for more
rewarding projects.

Personally I would never use Usenet on a mobile device. Too small and
writing articles is a nightmare.
