I just found out on the Apple newsgroup about Facebook shadow profiles

Apparently your friends and family are throwing you under the bus even if
you don't have a Facebook account (just as your friends and family are
throwing you under the Google bus by uploading their contacts to Google).

What can we each do to protect our friends' and family private details?

Simple : Go to their homes and destroy all devices that store such
"contacts" / "friends' and family private details" and than chain them to
the wall so they do not buy new ones.

Or you could try to educate them about the dangers of allowing random
programs access to their phones/'puters data.

.... Than again, human stupidity knows no end and people will easily succumb
to "just allow that (walled garden) program to access {stuff it should never
need}" to get that hyped new game to run / catvideo to show.

For contacts the solution is simple which is to never store them in the
place that is the default for contacts for whatever platform you're on.

Keep your contacts in a separate file (usually VCARD or VCS) and choose
your apps by their ability to import, cull, merge & export the database.

All well written apps support their own internal offline contacts db.

That is what *you* can do with the private data /of others/ that *you*
control - even if that might be cumbersome in the case of phone lists and
next to impossible when you want to be alerted about someones birthday or
your hairdressers appointment.

But look again at the posted question : its about how *we* could possibly
stop "family and friends" from throwing *us* "under the bus".
