No ringing sound after update

Hello all,

I do a help desk in the building where we live. A resident had a problem
with her Samsung smartphone. She just had an update and since then there
is no more bell sound when she gets a call. He does shake. I've checked
everything, the sound is on. What could be the cause?

Restarted the phone since the update?

Checked the volume level on the phone? Vibration doesn't need volume.
Ring volume is usually a separate setting than call volume. Go into
Android settings, Sound, and check ring volume. Also, try a different
global ring tone. Bell sounds like a pretty short ring tone, so maybe
it is going off, but too short for her to reliably hear, plus you should
test a different sound file just to be sure ring tones are generated.

If global ring tones are enabled, and one was selected that was NOT a
silent choice, check her contacts. It's possible the ring tone she
selected for contacts is no longer available on her phone. Some ring
tones are installed by apps, and if you uninstall the app then perhaps
their ring tones disappear, too. I use a different global ring tone
than for contacts. For the global one, I use a quiet ring tone which is
easy to ignore. When non-contacts call me, the soft ring sounds which
doesn't jar me out of whatever I was doing at the time. When contacts
call me, I assign them a much louder ring tone. When I get the louder
ring tone, I know it's a contact calling me, and not some spammer.

The volume buttons can control several different sounds, on my Samsung
phone five different sounds.

So don't assume that the volume buttons control the ringtone sound.

If this is a somewhat recent Samsung phone:

Press the volume up button. On the right you will see a vertical
volume bar (which goes away rather quickly, so pay attention) with a
slider.

At the top of that bar, there's an icon of three horizontal dots.
Tap that icon.

You now get a 'Volume' popup with several - in my case five -
bars/sliders, each of which sets the volume for a particular sound (also
this popup goes away rather quickly).

Just to be on the safe side, slide *all* the sliders all the way up.

The bars/sliders have icons at the bottom. AFAIK, the relevant i.e.
ringtone bar/slider is the one with the bell-icon.

Checked many things but haven't seen volume level.
