Apparently each one of those 18 mirror segments has to
be individually tweaked into perfect alignment. This
will take awhile ...

Will it be a 'once only', 'set and forget' thing, or will it be every
time you want to change the 'Target Object', you have to re-align all
eighteen 'mirrors'??

It is my UNDERSTANDING that once it's done, it's done.

However thermal cycling might, over time, cause the
alignment to slip and they'd have to repeat.

Segmented mirrors DO let you package up a much larger
scope, BUT they come with their own special complexities.

I still think that, given the overall cost and distant
location, they should have included a little 'e-monkey',
a telepresence robot with several 'arms' that can
grasp, pull, push, turn, kick various bits of the hardware
and navigate across the structure. With telepresence, it
would need very little in the way of "AI" and thus have
been pretty damned cheap insurance.
