I agree. It's bad enough in a restaurant when someone nearby talks on
a phone without speaker mode, and I only have to hear one side of the
conversation (many people speak very loudly when on the phone)--but
both sides?

In my opinion, restaurants should prohibit cellphone use. It's OK to
look something up on the Internet, but there should be no phone
conversations.

On the iPhone this capability is built into the operating system, no app
is needed.

Not sure why Google has not added this feature to Android. It's very
useful when you're at home, or alone in a hotel room, and are doing
other things when a call comes in.

OTOH, I've seen too many people use the speakerphone when other people
are around, which is very annoying.

Since I started getting spam calls on the cell, only 3 weeks ago, I got
one spam call while I was with the doctor, but I swiped it away without
answering it anyhow so speakerphone wasn't relevant.

Regarding the OP's request, such a mode could be very handy for someone
working alone in their office and not wanting to have to change the mode
manually every time.

I usually take calls in speaker mode as it frees up my hands - but I
have a closed office at work (when I go there - these days 1 or 2
times/week).

Yeah, since the iPhone includes this capability it would be nice for
Android to do it to, without the need to add an app.

I tried that app when it was first suggested (see my prior references)
where I didn't like how it worked in that it wasn't completely hands off.

however... and this is a biggie... my phone is set up for privacy...

That means I don't use the default dialer, nor the default contacts, so as
always, my experience may be more constrained in what the app can do.

I re-installed it though, and I will test it out for the OP and see how
well it works (I'm a few phones past when I last tested out that app).

The only time I make/receive cell calls is in the car, generally while
I'm alone. Most of them are "Yes, I'm here safe, do you need anything
at Costco?" The best ones are "I had a GREAT day skiing and am coming
home now..."

Under those circumstances, and if the subject matter is of interest, I
think it's proper to join the conversation. Same with people who are
talking loudly among themselves. "Private? Oh, I'm sorry, I thought
you wanted to include the rest of us..."

I installed it too, but it doesn't seem to work. I'll have to wait
until I'm actually away from home -- calling my home phone from 2 feet
away is generally iffy.

Curiously enough, when I searched for Auto Speaker with my phone this
one never turned up. Computer went right there and I pressed the
INSTALL button. Took quite a while (no reason I could imagine) but
ultimately it installed.

It did not work on my Pixel 7 Pro. I contacted the developer. He said
that this app does not work with Android 11. It did work on my old
Samsung Note 9.
