How is it that I frequently have a badge number more than 1 on my Text
icon, but when I tap on it, there is only one new text?

Today the number on the badge was 3. Where did the other 2 go?

If you mean an SMS message with "a text", it could be that a
long message was spread over two or three messages and
reassembled into one at arrival.

SMS is Short Message Service, messages are limited to 160 bytes,
which equals 160 chartacters if it's plain text.

It took me 4 days to turn my phone on again, so I could look.

A good idea but this last one was short.. Aha, I thought he said the
same thing twice in a row, but it may have been two texts from the same
stranger, but run together (with only one time specified) because from
the same number.

Tbhen today I got a new one recorded as two, but it had a contact link.
Maybe that counted as a second text.

I'll keep watching.
