Sometimes when leaving on a ride I'll notice that my chain and cogs [of course I use only a Regina Oro freewheel because cassettes are too new and unproven. (Just joking, Jay.)] look pretty dry and I'd like to oil them on the bike, without disassembling anything, so I can leave on the ride ASAP. Think there is any way to do this without getting oil on the rear rim, with the resultant brake squeal? I sure hate it when that happens. I'd be curious to know if any of you have devised a way to keep the oil off the rear rim. Thanks.

Use a small bottle of your favorite lubricant dripped over
the chain while backpedaling. For an oil product, a half
teaspoon or so. Wipe excess afterwards. For a teflon or wax
based lubricant, just go nuts and apply often.

This is pretty much what I've been doing, but the chain and cogs nevertheless seem to throw enough oil on the rim that I get brake squeal during the ride. I have to wipe the rim and brake pads down with grease and wax remover to get rid of it. Maybe a different lubricant would do better.

Indeed the trick is "wiping the excess" - my method is to take a shop towel and hold the bottom length of chain in it and backpedal until it is dry to the touch. Lubricant does nothing on the outside of the chain.

I buy 3 in 1 oil that is dirt cheap at Menards like $2.50 and is rated for up to 1/4 HP engines. i drip in on the chain at each pin and then wipe excess off. I get well over 6000 miles on my chains and have never figured out the fuss of bike chain lube that is $$$ at LBS.

Back in the days when I used oil products on my chain, I usually applied
it very precisely, one tiny drop at the left and right side of each pin.
I'd wipe it down well afterwards by backpedaling the chain through a
handful of paper towels.

Except I use a half-size Kleenex which is environmentally more friendly
(no oil goes in the wash and no real towels get thrown into the trash).

After a thorough cleaning with old interdental brushes (the slightly
curved GUM flossers), knife for scraping, old toothbrush and Kleenex, I
take another Kleenex half-sheet, crease it slightly, lean it against the
tire under the cahin and then apply White Lightning Epic Ride with a
Q-Tip. For that I shake the bottle vigorously and spritz a small
quantity into a salvaged tea candle glass. Everyhting is re-used here :-)

When done I slowly pedal backwards by hand. After half a dozen turns I
take the Kleenex, fold it at the crease and gently hold it to the chain
above and below while turning the cranks very slowly. At the end there
is not one drop of chain lube on the rim, tire or table.

I have the bike on the workbench for this so I don't have to bend down
all the time (bad back).

Bill, did another valley ride yesterday. Folsom, Rancho Cordova, with a
beer stop at Logoff Brewing on Sunrise Blvd.

A $10 bottle of White Lightning lasts me about a year between the road
bike and the MTB. The MTB needs a cleaning and lube latest after every
other ride, depending on miles and dust.

There is a difference. 3-in-1 or similar attracts dust faster and also
the stains on clothing or animal fur don't come out as easy. Dogs like
me a lot and come running once I am stopped, and unfortunately sometimes
brush up against the chain during the mandatory belly rub.

Hi, Joerg! I've been doing the Cedar Ravine Rd. loop recently. If I were to do that ride every day, I'd really get in shape. Unfortunately, I lack the discipline!

3 in 1 oil is a 20 weight oil. This is sufficient to carry the load of a normal rider but it attracts and holds dirt like crazy. This is why I don't like it. Though the Deacon is correct and it is a cheap lubricant capable of protecting your chain if used frequenty enough to keep the chain clean.

Kleenex, inter dental brush, tooth brush, Q tips? Holy crap. What is next? Cleaned one of my bike this week after a couple of wettish rides. After the bike was really dry I run the Squirt bottle with water solvable wax over the chain applying abundant lube over the chain while back pedaling. Leave it for a couple of hours/night and run the chain through a towel (small restroom towel). Towel gets washed for reuse. Wax has many advantages.

Maybe a rain dance and some incantations? :-)

The turf I ride contains a lot of brown or gray dust. Quite abrasive.
Not everything is paved out here and even the road bike must endure the
occasional stretch of dirt road. The MTB is on dirt almost all the time.
You don't want to just squirt lube onto that dust and massage it deeper
into the rollers.

This is not a dedicated gravel ride but a regular section of the Amgen
Tour near Piru, California:

https://media.gettyimages.com/photos/jurgen-van-de-walle-of-belgium-riding-for-quick-stepinnergetic-rides-picture-id73413269

The difference is that I don't have a team that takes my bike in the
evening and gives it a complete clean&lube.

Which brand of water-soluble wax? The Epic Ride I use contains wax along
with lube, provided one vigorously shakes the bottle before use.

My maintenance procedure is equally daunting. When my chain grows filthy enough I pull the quick release pin, put the chain into the ultrasonic cleaner buzz it for 5 minutes while I do other things, and then wash it off, let it dry and place it in the hot wax for enough time to heat the chain up to the temperature of the wax. I then remove it, allow it to drip off the excess and install it back on my bike. Silence for another 500 miles. Such terrible hard work and I have $30 invested in the ultrasonic cleaner, $5 in the soap and $2 from a thrift shop for the hot pot for the waxing, $3 for many sticks of canning wax and $10 for a bottle of Teflon particles which should last me the rest of my life.

My method leave no wax residue on the cogs. The canning wax with teflon in it doesn't stick to anything.

That stuff worked well for me but left a large build up of wax on the cogset.

I guess it depends on which chain lubricant you use.

I use foaming chain-lube for non-O-ring chains. I spray it, using the
extension tube, on the bottom, just behind the chain rings, while
rotating the chain backwards. None gets on the rim. Put something on the
ground under where you spray to catch any drips. I don't wipe the chain
afterwards.

It's a thin-bodied lubricant, with molybdenum disulfide that has a
foaming carrier that penetrates chain rollers, then the carrier
evaporates. The problem with a lot of chain lubricants that you drip
onto the chain is that the outside of the chain looks beautifully oiled,
but the oil has not actually penetrated into the pins and rollers.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000UKH86Y

You used to be able to find this at motorcycle parts stores but since
most chain-drive motorcycles now use O-ring chains, it may not be
available in-store. The O-ring version probably is thinner, in order to
penetrate past the O-rings.

Every time I read about these highly involved chain cleaning and
lubrication regimens I chuckle because it seems like "recreational chain
cleaning and maintenance."

Sometimes when the bike gets a good cleaning and seems about 2-3 times over the life of the chain I remove quick link and dunk in OMS. Shake up the chain and comes out clean as new. Then I re-lube and go back to riding. I clean my Ti bike with wd-40 and it cleans the chain ring and chain too, I lube with the typical 3in1. What I find that gets really dirty is the area around my fork at the brake attachment to the fork. Crud gets up in the hole area in the back where you take off the brake mount nut. I have to take the brake off and clean it out. Also at the fork crown as it that gets dirty. I also clean the brakes with WD-40 they get pretty dirty at times. My chain really for 3in1 does not pick up huge amounts of dusty but I ride on roads and generally not in horrible conditions.

Thanks, Lou. In case others are wondering, on this side of the pond
Amazon has it:

https://www.amazon.com/Squirt-Long-Lasting-Lube-bottle/dp/B00ANNR15G

A bit pricey but in the grand scheme of things that won't matter much.

Clearly you're not using enough stuff to clean and lubricate your chain.
At least you're not using a crockpot, double boiler, or butane torch.

Ultrasound is great but to be effective you need to run the
heat cycle and the degas cycle before that "5 minute buzz".
Otherwise you aren't cleaning the inside grit out.

Odorless Mineral Spirits.

Not sure why anyone would use 3 in 1 oil, it's a very expensive way to
buy light oil. Similarly, mineral spirits are an expensive solvent for
chain cleaning, you can use kerosene or #2 diesel.
