Jesus, those prices are ridiculous -- especially if she isn't exactly
what used to be known as a power user.

Look for 10" tablets on Amazon. Just as easy to return.

Then _weight_ should be a major criterion. My Samsung GT S6 Lite is
lighter than any of my previous tablets - but that's probably true of any
new device.

You don't need a $250 tablet just to watch Netflix IMO. If a Fire does
that for $100 then it's good enough.

Don't think any offer it but you could hook one to your phone's hotspot and
get the same result...

The 8" is 189 PPI and the 10" is 224PPI so yes there is some difference. But
it doesn't bother me. And for many things like book reading and traveling a
smaller tablet is better IMO...

All mine do and I think the current 8 and 10 inch do. The new 11 inch may
not. It also eliminated the earphone jack that the others have...

Are you sure not all the fire tablets have the normal headphone jack?
For tablets, it's pretty much been the standard since they first came out.

Thank you for logging into Costco to find the price for the suggested
Samsung Galaxy 10.4-inch Tab S6 Lite with 64GB 4GB RAM and for letting me
know it's out of stock (but she can probably find it on Amazon anyway).

To be fair to the other three suggestions, I should bring them all up or
down to the same size, where I don't want to provide her daughter with too
much detail.

Bob Campbell said there is only one 8 inch iPad (for over $500) and Chris
suggested the ten-inch size $329 https://www.apple.com/ipad-10.2/ and at
the same time David Taylor said the video is better on the 10-inch Fire.

So I'll limit all three (Fire, Android & Apple) to the larger 10 inch size.
I haven't checked prices or availability yet but does that seem to be fair?

1. An Amazon Fire 2022 10 inches, 64GB/2GB, with no ads for about $150
2. A Samsung Galaxy 10.4-inch Tab S6 Lite 64GB/4GB if avail, for about $250
3. An Apple iPad 9th gen 2021 10.2-inch model A2603 64GB/3GB for about $330

Is that the best bang for the buck in the 10-inch size for the three types?

True. All the many Fire tablets I've ever owned over the years have had
the standard headphone jack. However the new Fire Max 11 only has a
USB-C port which is used for both charging and audio. You would need
a headphone adapter to use it. They also have adapters that allow you to
listen and charge at the same time. (I had such an adapter for a Lenovo
tablet with only a USB port.) Course there's also Bluetooth listening.
Unfortunately (IMO) headphone holes seem to be going the way of the
dinosaur these days...

Samsung Galaxy 10.4" Tab S6 Lite for $249.97 at Costco.

Still has a headphone jack too!

A comparison of weight, in case that's important:

1 282g
2 465g
3 474g

Old iPad mini: 331g

It's not just the resolution, though. The interpolation is much poorer on the
8-inch (deliberate or just lack of processing power?) making the displayed
images much worse than the PPI difference would suggest.

For reading a Kindle takes a lot of beating and it is a more appropriate size.
Perhaps that might be a more educational gift?

I haven't used a Kindle in years. About the only advantages are size and
battery length IMO. My reading includes color photos so black and white
didn't do it. Also if I wanted to stray off and check something the browser
was horribly slow.

One thing I like about the Fire tablets is the holding comfort. They're
light, the plastic case is non slip with big rounded edges and wide bezels
I can put my fat thumbs on without doing something bad on the screen. In
contrast this Chrome tablet I'm posting with is heavier, has sharp corners,
narrow bezel, and it's metal case is cold. Unfortunately the new Fire Max
11 is that way too. That and no headphone jack stopped me from considering
one...

>Perhaps that might be a more educational gift?

It's a YMMV thing of course. I solved it by getting both. The tenner sits
permanently on my treadmill and the 8" is mostly for reading, like in the
can... ;)

What formats does the Kindle use?
I found these sites which are said to have every book you ever could want.
https://libgen.is/ & https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/

But there are many formats (epub, mobi, azw, azw3, pdf, docx, and more).
(I was looking for Oscar Wilde's "Salome" in the English translation.)

What format does the Fire tablet use to read the ebooks downloaded?

I see the Calibre ebook conversion tool has both an Android & iOS binary.
https://calibre-ebook.com/download

Does that calibre epub conversion software work on the Fire tablet too?
(Maybe with a conversion of Amazon-to-Google someone already spoke about?)

Dunno. I just used my Kindles for Amazon books.

I often get my ebooks from the thousands of "free" Prime books available
to me.

Many years ago I used to steal all my ebooks here on Usenet. I think I
used all those formats at one time or another. But then a grandson and
son-in-law became authors and I got religion. Now all my ebooks are
legal from Amazon or Google...

Fire tablets run the Fire OS which is a fork of Android. They can be
easily side-loaded so can run most any Android app. Thus you can likely
run most any Android ereader you wish.

Dunno.

That was me but there was no conversion. I just side-loaded 4 Google
apps that made it run like a Google tablet including the Play Store but
the Amazon side still worked as before...

That's a good point that it has the headphone jack.
https://www.costco.com/samsung-galaxy-10.4%22-tab-s6-lite-64gb---oxford-gray---includes-book-cover---sm-p613nzabxar.product.100660228.html

For $249.97 you also get the case, the pen, the charger, the cable, sdcard
slot, SIM slot, GPS, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (but maybe not wifi 6 though).

Can one pull the telco SIM card out of their phone and put it into that
Samsung tablet's SIM card slot and use it as their phone if they want to?

Or is the SIM card only for data?

Thank you for checking the prices. Apparently it's not in stock anywhere.

How does this one look as a replacement for that one which is out of stock?

Is the "LCD" what you look at or is the resolution what you look for?

I get mine (Kindle) almost exclusively from the local library's web

That is not the LTE model. No SIM slot.

Another question about Samsung Galaxy 10.4" Tab S6 Lite non-LTE model is
whether or not it has a GPS chip. It appears to have that capability.

On Android tablets with a GPS chip you can use them for navigation with
stored maps and with other applications that require GPS capability. The
Wi-Fi only iPads don't have a GPS which is a problem for some apps. I
always advised people to buy the LTE version of the iPad, even if they
were not going to sign up for mobile data, because they would get the
GPS which is necessary if using the tablet as an off-line GPS navigation
device.

What specific spec do you look for so that you can put a phone SIM into it?

It will say "LTE" or "Wi-Fi + LTE" or "4G LTE" somewhere.

i.e. <https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09MSQ53HQ> "HYUNDAI HyTab Plus 10 Inch
Tablet, IPS Display, 4G LTE, WiFi, FHD Android Tablet, 32GB Storage, 2GB
RAM, Quad-Core Processor, 5000 mAh Battery, Android 11 Computer Tablets."

Some, like this Hyundai model, will function as a phone when you put in
a phone SIM card. Some, like the iPad, cannot function as a phone, the
mobile data is for data only.

Thanks for your advice. The woman's daughter couldn't get the one on sale.

So she bought this one. Gray. With case. But no pen. Not on sale. $300.

Costco seems to be giving double the manufacturer's warranty, apparently.

It is 10.5 inches & it comes with 64GB + expansion + Wi-Fi + GPS + nanoSIM.
3.5mm port + 7AH battery charged by a 15 Watt USB-C charger (in the box).

Does this mean it can work as a phone if she puts her phone SIM in it?

Since there is no SIM card slot the answer is no.
