There's this wonderful newsgroup where you can and should post all your non-bicycling related crap.

rec.bicycles.misc

I know t his won't help rec.bicycles.tech get back to discussing mostly bicycle related stuff but it was worth a try.

Cheers

today, sucking on the government tit with the social security and the
medicare and medicad and the legalized minimum salary, all part of the
Old Fellow's scheme at least 130 years ago.

Its KARL, KARL, KARL, KARL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Marx.
I think Californy where Tommy lives has legalized Mary Je Wanna too. Maybe Tommy is smoking a toke or toking a smoke or whatever it is when he posts on this site. I always find it odd, and hypocritical of course, that a certain political party rails and screams against national health care insurance for everybody (YOUNG and old) but gets up on the soapbox to yell how they love the old folks and want to give them cheap Medicare.

Well, if you speak German, I'd guess. But in the land of the free and

If you're going to put on a superior tone, ShortAss, you shouldn't give away your ignorance and general lack of upbringing by misspelling a famous person's name in your 4th word. Try Karl with a K.

Of course like you continue to show your lack of understanding of the English language, I paid for both my SS and my Medicare. I have private medical insurance anyway so your stupidity continues.

But Tommy, that is exactly how a socialistic system works. First they
stick it to you, usually as taxes, payroll deductions, and so on. Then
to keep the commonality happy they give a little bit back.

Hey, Ridealot, why don't you start your own group, and attract new friends to it with your sparkling repartee? I did, and despite the fact that I turn away about 29 out of every 30 applicants for membership as not being qualified, it has, as of this morning, 28,200 active members, and growing. See, the advantage for a dull curmudgeon like you of his own LARGE group is that a) you will always have something interesting to read and b) you'll hardly every see anything to disturb you since you can turn away anyone who doesn't fit before they can disturb you. That's Franki-boy's fascist dream, but he's too unappetizing to get it off the ground. But maybe there are enough lockjawed pelotonites for you to have a group of your own posting daily about how they cleaned their chains. And wouldn't you love to have lots of people thinking of you as a benefactor? You need to choose your ground carefully, though. I ran an earlier group, in which intellectuals could say whatever they liked; while amusing, that was hard work because I was expected to shine; on the other hand, my current group is so large and lively, nobody even notices when I say nothing for a week or six because I'm away doing something else. -- Andre Jute

John, you may show your absolute ignorance of the facts of socialism all you like. But before you start calling things bought an paid for a examples of socialism perhaps you ought to read a book about it. Try Das Capitol.

If by that you meant Karl Marx is the direct intellectual
father of the Social Security/Medicare/Welfare fiasco, I
very much agree.

How do the fiascos of U.S. policy compare with those of, say, Canada?

How do the results work out? IIRC they tend to be healthier (including
far less COVID), yet have lower health care costs, they have far less
crime, less income disparity, far less military expenditure ...

There must be ways Canada is worse. Let's hear them, with explanations why.

Thanks for agreeing on that point.

Regarding Canada, which is utterly different from USofA in
deep cultural outlook, my opinion is that what Canada does
suits the 50%+1 of Canadians who do not live in Manitoba,
Alberta and Saskatchewan. Under their political system,
that's how it is.
Short answer = not my problem.

Sorry, Andrew. That sounds like an evasion.

I've not heard of any need for a northern border wall to keep desperate
Canadians out of the U.S. 50%-1 of them seem to be reasonably content,
despite the horrible socialist policies that provide better health care,
less health care expense, more paid parental leave, less income
disparity and all the rest.

Maybe someone else can tell me how Canada's economic policies are worse?

Their culture and norms make sense for Canadians. If you
like those policies and norms better, embrace their culture
and emigrate. I couldn't. Which makes Canada neither better
nor worse, just suited to Canadian sensibilities.

I'm sure Canadian sensibilities are not monolithic. But if I were able
to take along a few dozen people who are critically important to me, I
might be tempted to emigrate.

Still, I fail to see how (for example) spending much more on health care
yet getting far worse results is a norm that makes sense for Americans.
What's the benefit?

Ditto for young families entitled to no family leave, and paying the
equivalent of a second mortgage for child care.

What's the benefit to Americans of a murder rate nearly triple that of
Canada?

These are quantifiable matters. And they are not the only ways that the
Canadian system (and that of many other prosperous countries) beats ours.

I think a lot of Americans are blinded by misplaced patriotism.

On what grounds? Because the SS and Medicare are presently under funded because Obama spent the entire trust fund? That therefore makes it "socialist"? If you stick money in a savings account for your retirement is that socialist? Of course not. But if the government forces you to do something that you don't have the good sense to do for yourself it suddenly becomes socialist? Waiting until you are forced to support people that could have supported themselves if they had the better sense than they had makes it PLANNING and not socialist. The Southern Pacific Railroad had a large and well funded pension plan. When Congress allowed them to be bought out by the Central Pacific, it was the understanding that they did not carry that debt. So Congress stole my brother's pension. Giving him SS is socialist?

As for welfare, that is STATE OWNED AND RUN. Despite the fact that the Federal Government may contribute because the F-ing Congress was buying votes with our money. Welfare isn't socialist - it is what is known in the trade as CHARITY. There isn't a single organized religion that doesn't have some form of this and it isn't socialist.

It really does grow tiring that people that don't know what socialism is are so rapid to call one thing or another socialism. I suggest you talk to the East Germans and see what they had and what they thought of it.
