My son and I were riding around Lake Coeur d'Alene when a moose came
onto the MUP in front of us. Not sure who was more scared, but the moose
took off back down the embankment.

I doubt brown bears and moose have the same temperament. I've come across deer on trails and they run away.

I was once chased by a chicken. It was terrifying. I was chased by a black bear in Yosemite, which are not brown bears. I got on a rock, and it lost interest. It was some fat, garbage can robber that had been tagged and moved from the valley to the high country. Bear number 4. If you're still out there bear number 4, I've got your number.

The guy in the story had a gun and didn't use it. Why bother carrying a gun if you're not going to use it to scare off a bear? That's like having a flat repair kit and not using it to fix a flat. I mean really . . . options are shooting or getting mauled. Is there something I'm missing here?

There was a story in the Maine newspapers when I lived there about a
bloke driving down a small country road when he came up behind a full
grown moose. The moose wouldn't move out of the road so the bloke
drove up really close behind the moose and started blowing the horn.
The moose kicked the car grill and radiator in and then walked off
(:-)

I was riding one of my favorite roads, a charming narrow one that has a
sharp bend where a farm yard straddles it. Right at that bend, a chicken
jumped out in front of me and ran across the road.

I said out loud "Now why did you do that?" A woman sitting in a rocker
on the nearby porch burst out laughing.

I sure wouldn’t want to be mauled by a bear, but I’m not sure that being
mauled by a moose would be much less painful. Those suckers are BIG.

Chickens can be bad MoFos. They do have long claws on their toes. Roosters can be very aggressive. Although I doubt you would get much sympathy or awe from your riding buddies for a chicken attack. Whereas a bear biting you, you would be hailed as a hero or something or other.
