Apparently his parents are rather prolific business owners and very well connected in the town government - personal friends of the mayor and such. The DA accused the sheriff of going soft on the kid because of that. The Sheriff put out a press release distancing himself from the town management and the kids parents.

I think it's goes beyond just law enforcement connections. IIRC his
parents are true big shots in the county, very well connected and
influential.

That this kid was released without even a ticket issued for dangerous driving should put everyone involved in this out of a job.
