I have a version of GNU Radio loaded but scared of the time I'll burn
through once I begin looking at it:

This would have been so cool and useful to have back when I was still
working in the trade...

The RSP1A software includes filters and demodulator modules that you can try
on a signal until the result makes sense.
https://swling.com/blog/tag/sdruno-for-beginners/

The field below the spectrum is a waterfall displaying recent activity,
which is quite useful to detect voice communications as dashed lines. When
displaying FM music it shows each note.

A large external monitor or HDTV is recommended. I got decent HF reception
from my TV antenna, possibly from its 50' vertical downlead. A discone was
disappointing. If anyone asks, it's to communicate with flying saucers.
