Can I use a PAYG SIM in any unlocked phone?

My wife's phone is Android 4.4.2 and wont handle apps like WhatsApp. The
SIM is O2 PAYG

I want either to use her SIM in my unlocked Android V11 (and get a new
one)
I am on a SIM only contract having paid for my phone.

OR
Get her a new unlocked android and transfer the SIM.

The SIM size looks OK between hers and mine.

If she needs a smaller SIM, go into an O2 shop and they'll swap
it. You can't use an eSIM on O2 PAYG so you need a phone with a
physical SIM slot.

Or, if there's no shop handy, you can use a sharp knife. Though
old SIMs are thicker and last time I did that it didn't slide in
very easily.

Ask them. Keepgo ($30/3GB/1year) SIM people were happy to tell me which
phones would work and which wouldn't.

The UK doesn't have cellphone whitelisting as Verizon/etc do, so any PAYG
SIM should work in any unlocked UK phone. Different phones have different
support for 4G/5G bands so the coverage may be slightly different, but
UK networks only use a few of the bands each and so a UK phone is likely to
support the main ones in use.

There are apps that will, iirc say what signals are present at your
location. I don't know the names by heart, but if someone asks, I will
go find them.

from what you and others have said, I dooubt it's necessary. The phone
will probably work fine.

By definition if it's unlocked then any SIM should work. You can just try
it and see. It won't affect the phone nor SIM.
