I use very little data on my phone, looking at my provider's billing
it's usually only a few kB at a time with the odd 1Mb lump. However,
while I usually remember to turn the phone off when I cross the
channel on a ferry from UK to France I sometimes forget and then even
1Mb costs a ridiculous amount (not roaming in the middle of the
channel!).

Fortunately I'm on PAYGO and rarely have more than £5 credit so that's
my maximum loss but it's still annoying having to top up at an
inconvenient moment.

I guess I could just turn data off and see if anything stops working.

Under settings/network & internet/sims
then in my case O₂
I can set the amount of data and date that it resets (works well with
regular SIMO, may not work as well with irregular PAYG)
Under there is App data usage, for each of the previous four months, it
gives a list (sorted with greediest apps at top) of how much data has
been used.
Alternative way of getting usage info is
Settings/Apps/ then pick a specific app, then mobile data and wifi, then
it gives the same past four months usage for that app.

Andy gave information on 'stock Android', which sadly means only/
mainly *Google (Pixel et al) phones.

If your phone does not have those statistics - mine (Samsung Galaxy
A51 Android 13) doesn't have stats in the detail Any mentioned -, I
advice to install 'My Data Manager'. It will give very detailed stats on
*any* phone.

On my Android 13 Samsung Galaxy, it's trivial to see overall data usage by
Wi-Fi and by each individual app, each sorted by most data per app first.

Settings > Connections > Data usage > Billing cycle & data warning
Settings > Connections > Data usage > Mobile data usage
Settings > Connections > Data usage > Wi-Fi data usage

When you click on either of those latter two, you get the choice of
months backward to survey, with a list of each type of data used by each
app, in a most to least data sort (at least mine does that by default).

But point taken, it depends on how you interpret Andy's "the last four
months". I agree, you can interpret our (your and mine) stats as being
equal to what Andy described.

Anyway, the (snipped) My Data Manager app I mentioned, gives much more
stats than that, for example also per week or day and not just for 4
months, but also forever and it has also other functions, such as data
usage alarms, data plans, etc.. No comparison with what the phone
offers.

But indeed, Chris may not *need* such a powerful app, but if he tries
it, I'm sure he'll *like* it.

I'm unlike 999 out of 1000 posters on this newsgroup, where I think only
you and a few others have at least normal intelligence who can say
something that is believable - years on end - and it's believable.

I don't have access to a Pixel but I'd like to know if what I have is
similar to what you're seeing for each app's data usage on either Wi-Fi or
on Mobile Data for the past month (or two or three, as the case may be).

In that light, can you take a look at these screenshot collages I made for
you just so that you and I can tell if the GUI you have on your Pixel is
kind of sort of similar to the GUI that is native on my Samsung Galaxy?

statistics that my Galaxy has (and I suspect yours does too).

The reason I suspect that is I'm intelligent enough to assemble facts into

I would like to ask you to L@@K at your A51 where I suspect those exact
type of stats that are available to me are also available to you.

Mine, paradoxically, only go back to November of last year, but that could
be due to me wiping out cache (or other data reset operations over time).

An Umidigi Bison running Android 11, pretty much default out of the
box Android with no cusotmisation.

My android 11 device simply doesn't have 'Connections' in Settings.

That is the wrong way to put it since the menu options change over time.

To explain further since you said it as if you expect the exact same menus,
it could easily be that nobody on Android 11 has "Connections" but that
doesn't mean anything because there is a "connections-related" option in
Android 11.

These names change over time.
You're supposed to look for the equivalent.

Yes, all of those look very close to what the Pixels can show, seems
manufacturers are tinkering less with the firmware they provide ...

Thanks. I thought so. It was odd that Frank had said it wasn't on his
Galaxy as when I tested, it was on mine (and in an obvious location).

Thanks for confirming that the Pixel is similar to the Galaxy.

I'm constantly making one-tap shortcuts and I notice at times that a lot of
them end up with Samsung-specific activities - which is a PITA in terms of
writing general use tutorials.

IMHO, the less the OEMs tinker with the Android build, the better!

In this thread, the responses have been mainly concentrating on what
you asked, "Can oe tell what apps have used data?" ("oe" is "phone"?).

But re-reading your post, I realize that your actual *problem*, not
question, is unvoluntarily spending money on roaming data.

If that's indeed the problem, why don't you just switch off data
roaming? Any half decent phone should be able to do that.

(And BTW, my suggested app, which you apparently don't want to
install because you have/use only a few apps, can set an alarm on
roaming data usage, but I doubt you'll hear the alarm quickly enough
before spending too much money/data. (On Android, an app can no longer
switch off data, at least not without jumping through all kinds of
hoops.))

But I need roaming data sometimes, so I'd have to remember to turn it
on and off. However having roaming data turned off by default does

There are plenty of good solutions for you, but some take upfront effort.
For example, you can set a geofence which, when you get into the geographic
area, automatically turns off data roaming.

The phone will automatically turn data roaming back on when you leave the
geofenced area. Once set up, it's completely automatic in operation.

However, my suggestion for you is to simply create & tap a one-tap
data-roaming shortcut (which takes less time to set up than it took me to
create this graphic showing you exactly how to set it up on any phone).

Tap the roaming shortcut once, and data roaming goes off (if it was on).
Tap it again, and data roaming turns on (if it was off).

Set an alarm when you travel if you think you might forget to tap it.
