Russell, again you aren't thinking. Guns do not often actually hit their targets. Especially on moving targets. In times of war they estimate 250,000 shots for every kill. When you STAB someone you know you hit them. You appear to be one of those trained to fear guns. That isn't especially bad until you grow and entire mythology around them.

Yes the 250,000 rounds per enemy killed is a valid number, however it
is basically a logistics and supply factor, rather then a "we'll shoot
250,000 times and one of the enemy will fall down dead.

Facts are that more deaths are caused by explosive in Afghanistan and
Iraq then any other weapon.
https://academic.oup.com/ije/article/36/4/841/670068?login=false

"IEDs accounted for 53% of all fatalities in Iraq in 2006 to September
17, and for 62% of hostile deaths (282/457: 95% CI from 57 to 66%)"

"Small arms fire was responsible for 61 out of 457 hostile deaths
(13%); and for 61 out of 175 non-IED hostile deaths (35%: 95% CI from
28 to 42%) in Iraq in 2006 (to September 17). Similarly, small arms
fire accounted for 29 out of 249 hostile deaths overall (12%) in
Afghanistan; but for only 29 (16%) out of 186 non-IED hostile deaths.

>I am unaware exactly how this New Mexico criminal accomplished his stabbing spree. Whether he rode his bike to one place and stabbed 11 people in that one spot, or rode around for an hour or two and stopped 11 times and stabbed one person and then rode to the next spot to stop and stab. If he had used a Glock 17 handgun, he would have had 17 rounds in the magazine. And he could have had a backpack with fresh loaded magazines every time he stopped. So he could have reloaded his gun with a new magazine. He could have shot 17 times at each stop and most likely a few of those 17 shots would have been successful in killing the victim. The numerous recent stories about cops chasing a suspect and shooting them 17 times in the back usually result in the person being dead.
>
>Concerning your 250,000 shots fired per death comment. rJohn also addressed this. Modern weapons and warfare, battles, skirmishes, have changed over time. Rapid fire weapons are far more common. And tactics are different today too. Back in Vietnam, helicopters used to fly over the jungle, or combat area, and fire the M2 50 caliber machine gun at the jungle. They just fired bullets. Sort of a harassment strategy. Not really designed to kill people. Modern helicopters have those GAU-17 miniguns on them. They are used for suppressive fire. Keep heads down. 2,000 to 6,000 rounds per minute electrical Gatling guns. No one thinks every bullet fired is going to kill someone. These miniguns were also used in Vietnam. And Iraq and Afghanistan. And back in WW2 the Germans invented the MG42 machine gun. 1200 rounds per minute.

Actually some helicopters in Viet Nam had Mini guns. In fact I built
mounts to install two on a Huey, one on each side, belt fed, which
limited their firing rate.

As an example of how screwed things were in that "war" when the Army
discovered that we had mounted mini guns on a helicopter they went to
MAC-V and complained that the Air Force wasn't authorized to have
armed helicopters. We went ahead and armed a second and told MAC-V
that they were for "Air Base Defense" so we got to keep them.

That was back in the days of "Puff the Magic Dragon" C-47/DC-3's with
three magazine fed mini guns firing out of the L.H. side of the
fuselage. Mostly in support of Special Service forts in the jungle.
Our brag was that we never lost a fort if we got there before the
Vietcong got through the walls. I had more than a few beers bought
for me on that brag (:-)
