As Carbon Fiber becomes more common and more people gain experience with it I expect some real loony things. Companies are limited to building things supposedly safe whereas private builders aren't.

But there is always the Time factory tactic. Build framesets using about 50% carbon fiber and 50% Aramid fibers. This makes it extremely difficult to break a frame since Aramid is almost the same strength as carbon fiber but it doesn't tear.

Wish it were available when they were that age!

OK, honestly, it wouldn't have made a difference. I found one at a
garage sale - even though I never visit garage sales. It worked
perfectly for the brief time it was used.

Kids bikes are kind of a problem. It's hard not to want a "good one" for
the kid, but a growing kid churns through bikes at a really rapid pace.

(Analogies charitably omitted.)

As much as is this is just a project done for fun by somebody with much
better facilities than your average geek, they do make a point. A lot of
children’s bikes out there are quite heavy, especially compared to the mass
of their riders.

True. The last bike I built up was for a grandkid. It was languishing in
front of an antique shop in a distant city, a tiny mixte frame beauty
that weighted less than 20 pounds. That's very light for a kid's bike.

It took a month to overhaul, and unfortunately I couldn't keep the
super-light wheels, but it was a fun project and much appreciated.

(If anybody needs a pair of 18" x 1" or 19-400 wheels and tires, I've
got 'em.)

Also a child's bike that isn't out there. Dr. I forget's baby bike
was built with tractor tires so that the child couldn't tip it over.
Alas, he had no plans to try to sell the design, thinking that there
was no market for a bike that a child needed for only five minutes
(after a lap or two on the baby bike, a child could ride any bike).

He forgot that nursery schools have a lot of children who could use
five minutes each.

And that the bike was as cute as a bug, and the huge tires would seem
very grown-up and tough to a little boy.

The huge tires would also make it possible to ride on soft ground in
the back yard.

And above all, the heavy little bike restricts a child to a pace that
the average terrified baby sitter can exceed without sweating.

It was demonstrated at a GEAR, possibly GEAR '89 Sarasota.
