_The Soul of a Cyclist_

https://pedalandtringtring.com/2022/02/26/the-soul-of-a-cyclist/

This is a documentary on the experience of riding bikes not to train,
not to race, not even to do something really crazy like riding coast to
coast. It's about riding just to ride; and making riding a normal part
of your life. And especially, doing it using classic old equipment.

I thought it was quite lovely. It was fun eagle-eye spotting things like
TA cranksets, Delta brakes, handlebar bags and more - not to mention all
the really outlandish things in a London Tweed Ride. It's too bad Jay
Beatty isn't hanging around here any more. He'd have great fun mocking
the film!

If you'd like something different, relaxing, and maybe even a little
heartwarming, give it a try. AFAIK it's available only by streaming on

The whole Eroica scene is 'also' fashion. Nothing wrong with that. Buddy of mine is into that. Great guy.

Frank believes that TA cranks are cute. Nothing wrong with that I suppose but it is hardly to target of this group.

They are heavy, weak and need a tapered square bottom bracket. I have twisted the pedal end of a TA crank off and I am not and never was particularly strong.

A steel Paramount with a modern Ultegra crankset with one piece crank axle is about as good as they come.

I've got them on two bikes. (Well, the utility bike has, astonishingly,
a compatible copy by Sugino.)

On the tandem, they worked out well because of the astonishing number of
tooth choices available. Back in our youth, we were able to use some
unusually high gears; and of course, a tandem with a kid on the back
needs some extra low gears.

But TA must have hired a specialist to think of the most complicated
chainring mounting system possible!

It certainly is dressing up for fun, as is a Tweed Ride. But that's more
like putting on a special outfit for a costume party or other special
event than buying into a commercially promoted fashion.

University faculty members have to attend graduation ceremonies in caps
and gowns. That's a costume. Fashion would be if professors everywhere
started wearing caps and gowns in daily life to show off; and then other
people started doing the same so others would think they were
hyper-educated.

Anyway, it's a very pleasant movie. We re-watched it last night.

Mine seem to be hanging on after 47 years of commute (only
half-years after 1992). Crank bearing rebuilt a few times
with new balls, still original spindle & cups. Dead pedals
replaced several times (Lyotard 23 only go 12~15 years at
best) but no crank problems whatsoever.

It was the worldwide design standard at one time - Cyclo,
Magistroni, Williams, Stronglight, Zeus etc (including your
Sugino Dynamic) . Modern chainring mount diameters are now
large enough to slip over a crank without removing either
crank or pedal, which is nice. Then again 26t inner was nice
too!

Back in 1976, when I bought my first Paramount tandem, they came equipped with T/A and it seemed to work pretty well.

Nope.

Final Campagnolo 5-bolt was 135mm, prior 144mm. Don't know
of any 5-bolt rings in 138mm. The TA Tevano was
interchangeable with Nuovo/Super Record (144mm 5-bolt,
forged arms)

Classic TA for Cyclotouriste, Randonneur or Criterium[1] are
a small 5-bolt outer-to-crank. The inner bolts to the outer
with six bolts:
http://www.yellowjersey.org/tacy.jpg

[1] Like the various iterations of 'Record', TA also used
'Criterium' for another completely different format.

My mistake, I meant 144 where you could only mount 52/3 and 42/4
