You could probably see my collection from space and although I consider that I got them for a steal they were all bought legally. The problem now is trying to sell them. The local Craigslist is so flooded with junk bikes that the occasional good one is lost in the chaff. No shop will sell them for you because the difference in profits. So, the selling process takes literally years in some cases.

sorts his steel and aluminum diligently the AL is worth some

I would comment that Thailand imports, or did import, "second-hand"
bicycles in shipping container lots for the second hand market here. I
believe that most were shipped from Japan, or at least the two I
bought were from Japan, but perhaps G.B. has/had a share in the
market.

As a nearby resident to Santa Cruz, California, I avoid going there as much
as possible and never at night. Every time I've left my bike locked up in
an unenclosed area there it's been pilfered or pawed through.

Growing up in a "Leave it to Beaver" kind of world, I was not prepared for
that, nor the complete acceptance that "That's just the way it is...of
*course* someone will try to steal your stuff."

When wife and I took the train from Switzerland to Italy to visit a college
pal we left the bikes--fully loaded--at the train station. Though I fretted
mightily, it was for naught. The bikes were completely unmolested when we
got back.

Oh well...

I'm not exactly clear how to deal with the theft problem. When the police and DA so not arrest and prosecute it is open house.

Probably. It's necessary to give burned or shredded offerings to the
bicycle gods, to insure the successful creation of a new bicycle.

Locally one of the illegals tried to open a shop selling cheap used bikes for transportation purposes. I cleaned out a lot of my shelves and gave him some descent equipment to try and help him along. But he couldn't hack it. He is gone.

Now I will not pretend I am as pure as the driven snow. (Tommy, that is frozen water that falls from the sky in the winter.
