I've seen maybe a few broken cranks since I started paying attention in the mid 80's and this article doesn't suggest it's endemic. Still, this is an example of weight-weeni-gone-amok.

"Light, cheap, durable: pick two." And the standard for "light" is
always getting more exacting.
