Rainy today with some thunderstorms so I put 20 miles on the bike in the basement on the trainer. Worst day I ever had for feeling warm and put out an incredible amount of sweat. Then it cleared and I decide got to get out and get some air. So I took off no rain and at mile 20 it started raining. Well no thunder that was good the deacon is completely afraid of lighting and thunder and will get anywhere to get out of it. However rain itself not a problem.

So then finished the ride 36 miles and came in. Later today I decided maybe to check the bike. It is as Wilier CF and is was basically clean as no mud to go through. I wiped it down with WD-40 and clean the chain, re-lubbed it and bike is looking good. Funny thing is wonder how much any of that was necessary as such. The bike is CF and the chain while it got wet really was clean and it is basically a new chain less than 500 miles on.

Frankly I think the sweaty mess of riding inside was far worse than riding in the rain. Had it been muddy then cleaning it would be needed but otherwise I wonder if I even made a difference on it.
Deacon Mark.

While riding in the rain is not too cold weather isn't bad at all, the problem isn[t riding the bike but the cars that may not see you.

I rode about 50 km out of 82 km in the rain today. This time of the year there is not much sand and mud on the roads here from the farmers so the bike stays relative clean while riding in the rain. At home I have an air compressor and I blow chain, cassette, pedals and RD an FD dry with compressed air and it leaves a pretty clean bike after that. I lube the chain tomorrow with wax based lube. This stuff I use keeps up very good in the rain and the sand/mud stays on the outside. After blown dry with compressed air the chain looks very clean. Worst thing is my shoes are soaked, but I have a back up pair so I let them dry gently.

MIne keep squeaking when I turned the cranks out of the saddle. The rubbing against the crank arms and yes my shoes where soak to the core.

"the deacon is completely afraid of lighting and thunder"
Is that occupational related?

That is one of the advantages of going gravel or off-road, is that
generally don’t have to bother with cars, and road spray which can be
fairly grim on the road.

Well, you're quite right but the dirt on gravel roads sticks mud all over the bike in the most unlikely places. I've had to dig the lower derailleur cable guide out from under an inch of mud. And on some carbon fiber bikes there is a hole though the base of the rear triangle for the front derailleur cable to come through. The rotation of the rear wheel pours water and mud down through this and destroys the bottom bracket area which has a steel shaft going through it.

I’ve not noticed the bottom bracket wearing, they seem to as new bike be
made of cheese but after that last a good few years, and all of my bikes
are grubby at least riding.

My old MTB which is a commute beast does seem to kill the headset
reasonably regularly probably the weight.
