What do you think of this and what is the different between steel 853 and the other numbers I am lost. The price too?

Well Reynolds 853 is an "weldable air hardening alloy steel" and has a
tensile strength of 1200 MPa... or 174,045 PSI... which is the second
strongest of the Reynolds alloys. Only the 953, which is listed as a
Stainless alloy, is stronger. So essentially the frame material is
"top" quality.

The question then becomes, does the frame fit, is it a quality builder
and is it what you want? The last is probably the most important (:-)

Frame is good. Lemond brand is good. I think Trek made the Lemond bikes. But then Greg and Trek got into an argument and things went south. But its a good quality bike. You could happily ride it forever.

But, the 853 Reynolds TIG frame seems to be above the components. The components are nine speed Shimano 105. Fine, good, OK components. But they are now about 25 years old. And 105 was/is Shimano's lower level parts. But the 853 frame seems to be a bit higher level. I would have expected Ultegra level or Dura Ace parts on a 853 frame.

Quill stem. Nothing wrong with that. But forks have been threadless for 20 or more years now. The shifters are the old style STI with the cables sticking out the side of the levers, not under the tape. Parts, chains, cassettes are readily available for this bike. So no problems there.

If I owned this bike, I'd ride it and be happy and not think about replacing it or getting a new bike. But, if I was buying a new bike or a different bike, I would not want this one. Unless I was really bargain shopping or just needed something right now. 650 price? I can't really say if that is good or bad. The bike looks really nice and almost new condition. But it is 25 years old. Personally I think $650 is at the high end.

I've had two of those. They are fairly light for a steel bike and the handling is very good. One of them I had had been on the shelf since new so it was a brand new frameset. I simply ran out of room and sold it off. Now that I'm reducing my bike count I have no more room for another but that would be a VERY good choice and although the fork is threadless carbon fiber, it is a very strong construction and I didn't feel nervous when riding it.

Once again, Tommy boy shows his stupidity. Tommy boy, if you look at the picture the deacon posted, it is clearly a QUILL stem and threaded fork. But our Tommy boy writes "the fork is threadless carbon fiber". Gosh. Isn't there some world famous saying about having eyes but not seeing? Our Tommy.
