Last? It is here to stay. At least in the Netherlands.

What happens when the cost of electricity gets too high to charge them? While it hasn't happened in the last week, last week when I got up, my computer had been power cycled during the night meaning that there were power outages. I just went up for BREAKFAST and it cost almost $50 for two. Even though I have a senior citizen discount my Pacific Gas and Electricity bill was over $100 AGAIN and I don't have any air conditioning. Coming soon to a town near you. A quarter of a mile away they are repaving the street and the depth of asphalt is less than half of what it should be. In three places within a mile and a half, the sewer lines had begun leaking. 4 miles away they've had a freshwater leak for so long that the groove it has cut is 6" deep. I've called the water company a dozen times to no effect.

BTW, I again had a failure of my Garmin 830. It stopped recording at 4 miles. Garmin service people have been very helpful. They told me that ALL of the speed/cadence sensors will work but suggested I disable it to test if it still fails. Apparently if the sensor fails in a particular manner it won't automatically change over to GPS tracking. As soon as my extra car sells I will buy the latest and greatest speed and cadence units.

I assume you are using these sensors. You seem to be satisfied with them.

I apparently sweated over 2 litres of water yesterday and today I'm so exhausted I don't want to do anything. I started out late on a ride and made it only halfway and simply ran completely out of energy. And I only climbed 400 feet. Perhaps a third of that was 10% or steeper.

I am now pretty much convinced that the Garmin unit itself is working correctly and it has to be something else. For the first 4 miles yesterday it worked perfectly. Then it just stopped. It did tract my entire ride on the GPS, it just didn't record speed and distance.

It costs pennies to charge an ebike. I doubt many or any will notice that amount. To compensate you could watch an hour less TV or spend an hour less on the internet.

> While it hasn't happened in the last week, last week when I got up, my computer had been power cycled during the night meaning that there were power outages. I just went up for BREAKFAST and it cost almost $50 for two.

Tommy is paying $25 for breakfast? Wow. Tommy is living mighty high on the hog. And he complains about his grocery bill? I eat a bowl of Raisin Bran, milk, maybe toast and an egg and banana for breakfast. More than enough. Tasty too. $1? $2? I am way too cheap to pay $25 for breakfast. Whether I could afford it or not. Paying $25 for breakfast would make me so mad I just could not do it. I'd starve and go hungry before paying $25 for breakfast.

Tommy is an expert in road building now. Not too surprised.

Old, ancient, dated infrastructure. Oakland was probably built 100+ years ago. Everything is wearing out now. Earthquakes don't help either.

Nothing will happen. For example, a typical 36V 25AH eBike battery
can store:
36 * 25 = 900 watt-hrs
Assuming you start charging at 20% SoC and stop at 90% Soc, one charge
will be:
900 * (0.90 - 0.20) = 630 watt-hrs
Charging efficiency is about 99% for Li-Ion.
630 / 0.99 = 636 watt-hr
is needed to charge this eBike battery pack.

The average cost of domestic electricity in California is about
$0.25/kw-hr or $0.00025/watt-hr. Cost per charge is:
630 watt-hrs * $0.00025/watt-hr = $0.16
That's less than a drop in the proverbial bucket.

You really should consider doing back of the envelope calculations
before you announce any more amazing facts.

IF you connect a DC generator to your bicycle on a trainer and use it
to charge your eBike battery. You could probably produce an average
of 150 watts continuously. For 636 watt-hrs to charge the 900 watt-hr
battery in my example:
636 watt-hrs / 150 watts = 4.2 hrs
I guess I could claim that charging an eBike from utility power saves
4.2 hrs of pedaling. That's quite a bargain for $0.16.
