A number is called "negative" because it indicates a shortfall or a lack. However, in reality there really isn't any such thing as a "negative number"..

Definition: A negative number is a number that indicates a difference from nothing.

Example for idiots: A dam is built to hold only the recommended 100 tons of water. It can hold an extra 20 tons without overflowing. The dam now has 110 tons.

How many tons of water must be added to ensure the dam holds only the recommended tonnage?

Answer: -10 tons

In the example, 10 is a number but the negative preceding it indicates that <<removing 10 tons>> is what is required to return to recommended tonnage and the negative sign indicates DIFFERENCE or SUBTRACTION. In reality, there is only the number 10. The negative sign is an OPERATOR.

Mitch is right for once. That's quite good because you are WRONG ALL the time. LMAO.
