My little cousin asked me to multiply 34*3, and show him the work...

So, in my head, I said it is equal to:

3*3*10 + 3*4*1 = 102

His mom said I was wrong because I did not show how to carry!

ARGH!

I'd just figure it was a tad over 100 and divisible by three.

less accurate, but faster,
to do it from front to back, get it in the ballpark, for head math...

3*3 = 9 or 90

3*4 = 12

90 + 12 = 102 exactomundo

to easy...

71 * 82 ? [5822]

7*8 = 56 or 5600

1*2 = 2

since they are only 9 apart take 9/2 = 4.5 or 45

5600 + 2 + 45 =5647

5647/5822 = .97 OR 3% low

.....................

(add real cross term)
8 + 14 = 22 or 220
220 + 5600 + 2 = 5822

........................

see how bad it is with a square
square -- 71*71 [=5041]

7*7 = 49 or 4900
1 cross term 0 * 10

for 4900+1+0*10 = 4901 => about 2.8% low

..................

OK smartie, try 93 * 27 ? [2511]

1800
21
cross is about 60 (just glancing at it)=> 600

1800 + 600 +21 = 2421 or 3.6% low

What about:

82*7*10 + 82*1*1 = 5822

Therefore what about:

(7*8*10+7*2*1)*10 + 82*1*1 = 5822

Getting close to final form would be:

(7*8*10+7*2*1)*10+(1*8*10 + 1*2) = 5822

My sister and I were watching "Who Wants To Be A Millionare" and they
had a multiple choice question about 'If a cat really had nine lives,
how many years would it live?'

Sis spent her young working life as a veterinarian's assistant, so she
knew the average lifespan of cats and made her guess by multiplying by
ten (close enough to nine) to get in the ballpark knowing it was a high
estimate she found an answer that was close.

I had a ballpark figure also, but realized the answer would be
divisible by three (cats have 3 times 3 lives) and picked the one in
the ballpark which also was divisible by three before she had the
chance to make her guess.

She's not a math person and asked me how I got the correct answer so
quickly, so I explained. Another day a week or so later they had a
Yahtzee question about probabilities of throwing five ones or twos or
threes etcetera, any five of a kind. I figured the dice have six sides
and again two answers were in the ballpark one of which was divisible
by three. Not even thinking about the number of sides on a die she
noticed the specificity of the answers and did the little 'divisible by
three' check and got the right answer.

Sometimes, there is an easier way to do things.

What an obfuscated way to teach anyone how to multiply. It's even worse than Simon Stevin's rote method.

A simpler way:

30*3 + 4*3 = 90 + 12 = 90 + 10 + 2 = 100 + 0 + 2

>
> His mom said I was wrong because I did not show how to carry!

She is right about the carry. After all, the multiplication process in decimal (ala Simon Stevin) is designed to represent a number, viz 102/1 in decimal:

Hundreds Tens Units
____1____ _________2___

So, 90 + 12

_______ __9___ ______
_______ __1___ __2___
_______ __10__ __2___

But since we only use digits 1-9 in the decimal system, we write the last line as:

____1____ _________2___

>
> ARGH!

Yep. You're an idiot and nothing will ever change this.

1/3 has no measure in decimal, but 102/1 does:

Hundreds Tens Units
____1____ _________2___

redux to 7,2,1

(7*(7+1)*(7+2+1))+(7+2+1))*(7+2+1)+(1*(7+1)*(7+2+1)+2*1)) =5822

(seems like the wrong way to go, aha! try Binary!)

1000111 * 1010010 = 1011010111110 (ugh, makes my eyes squirm)

1,000,111 * 1,010,010 = 1,011,010,111,110 (... perhaps QR code?)

I think you have mismatched parentheses here:

lol! Well, I did not show him how to carry, touche. I know how to do it,
but failed to actually show him. So, yeah: That was bad on my part. Shit
happens! Argh again. ;^o
