Just wanted to say that I enjoyed your customer pics on State Street.
Years ago I commuted on a bike to downtown Madison from Monona and
McFarland. Years later I spent a fair amount of time on the Military
Ridge Trail which I lived very close to for a while. I stopped at
Riley a few years ago. Boy, has that place changed.

The neighborhood around Klevenville-Riley Road hasn't had
any hatchet-wielding manics this week AFAIK. This could change.

Years ago, I myself yeilded an ax not far from that segment. That and
a chain saw and a splitter...

Going up there this coming weekend.

I say again, Andrew: a "fixie" is a small injection of morphine or heroin. A fixed-wheel bicycle is called just that, and only began to be called a "fixie" when fixed-wheel bicycles began to be popular among the airhead Gen X'ers. And please don't try to justify or rationalize the use of such a dummy term, Andrew; I don't want to hear your R & J shit again. Please quit insulting your readers by using that term. As a long-time bike shop owner you should know better. Thank you.

Sorry for your drug-centered mindset. Would a change of diapers help
comfort you?

You have your sources but in some neighborhoods where I'm
familiar, that's a 'fix':

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/fix
Noun, def #4

'fixie' unknown:
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/fixie

Cambridge: 'fix' refers to drugs in both verb and noun:
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/fix

Only one definition shown for 'fixie':
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/fixie

that being fixed gear bicycle.

Are there regional meanings? Probably. I was unaware of that
usage.

There's also an alternate spelling of "fixey":
<https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=fixey>
<https://www.google.com/search?q=fixey&tbm=isch>

I once had someone bang on my office door asking to talk to the
"fixie" (noun). Apparently, that was his term for the person who does
repairs. I didn't persue the matter with him as he seemed to be
intoxicated. I only heard it once, so I assume the term didn't gain
general acceptance.

I've never used the term 'fixie' for a fixed gear, but I don't have any issue with those that do. I've never heard 'fixie' used in the context of drugs though, always as 'fix'. I'd hardly call myself naive - especially if you knew of my rather sordid past in my late teens and early 20's before I got my shit together.

I've heard medical people refer to "fix" in reference to a single dose
of medicine.

Or even to a temporary repair on a car or bike as in "It's a short
time fix but it will get you home".

t bicycle messengers over in San Francisco used to all ride fixed gears because it was 100% reliable. I never heard any of them refer to them as "Fixies" but since the term has gained popularity who cares?

Language is always on the move, certainly I’ve heard fixed and a fixie used
to describe bikes for quite a few years now, though they are less common
again.
