Hurricanes and typhoons are caused by large temperature differentials in water and air temperatures. So since the gulf stream is very warm, it is due to cold air temperatures. So since they claim that climate change is heating the planet that would of needs cause fewer hurricanes.

Most of my neighborhood is still here. The hurricane appears to be
staying pretty far away so it won't be blowing me away. We will be

Actually, where I live, north of Tampa/St Pete, the tides are
predicted to be lower than normal because we'll be getting mostly
easterly and northerly winds. Sarasota and further south will be
getting the big storm surge. Port Charlotte will be getting the worst
of it.

We're in good shape if the power goes out. Oil lamps. PLenty of food.
Fridge and freezer stuffed with water and other liquids to help keep
it cold. A gas grill if I need it, and even a small generator. The
worst of it for us will be the possible loss of the air conditioner.

My family and I have used oil lamps for decades. I used them when I
lived on the boat anchored away from shore power and didn't want to
waste the batteries. I also have flashlights, but I don't really
espect any long power outages.

I know the news media has to project the worst possible scenario and
the local gvt never even tries to enforce the evac mandates.

I lived on my boat in Tarpin for a while. Tarpin is pretty safe, this
time, and I'm even further north.

I went through a lessor hurricane years ago while living on my boat in
St. Pete Beach. I actually spent the time in my girl-friend's (now
wife's) condo. The boat was fine when it was over, but another marina
I had previousy lived at in Bradenton was heavily damaged.

One member of our extended family will now miss the eye, since the path
has turned eastward. But he was never told to evacuate despite being
quite close to the Gulf. His concrete apartment building's elevation is
well above the expected storm surge, and his apartment is eight feet
above ground level. He calls it a "fortress."

But in events like this, there are always many people who think they
know better than the officials and later pay for their hubris. Taxpayers
fund attempts at their rescues.

There are "mandatory" evac orders for every gulf coast county in
Florida south of the Suwannee River. They are mostly limited to
designated zones close to the gulf, rivers, or in low-laying areas. I
am in such a zone, but just across the street is zone that where there
is no such order. If your relative is not in a mandated evac zone, he
is far enough away to be out of danger..

OTOH, some folks don't have the experience or the courage to make
their own decisions about such things. Some of those folks imediately
packed up and hot-footed to Orlando which is now directly in the
storms path, while their homes are completely out of danger. I know
some of the people in my neighborhood have done exactly that. They're
the same people I've seen wearing masks while alone in their car that
has a Biden bumper sticker.
