Maybe it is a ferrite rod with a stand up routine having a tough time
coming up with new material. :-)

In rod we trust? How could they be taken seriously?

Inanimate... dead.
Ferrite... female form of "ferret"

Reasonable suspicious, but I don't think so. I tried playing with
translations and nothing obvious showed up.

Which suggests that *someone* must know what that means.

Could it be related to old-fashioned pushbutton-tuned car radios? They
did some really tricky electro-mechanical things to set the stations.

It's a dumb "Simpsons" reference from 27 years ago.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_Space_Homer

At the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant, Homer Simpson believes he will
win the Worker of the Week award; it is a union requirement that every
employee gets the prize and Homer is the only plant employee who has
never won. Instead, Mr. Burns, Homer's boss, gives the award to an
inanimate carbon rod.
....

However, Homer unintentionally lodged the rod in the shuttle door,
closing it and allowing Homer and the other astronauts a safe return
to Earth. The rod received all the credit. It was featured on the
cover of Time magazine with the caption "In Rod We Trust!".
