This is precisely why Franks lives there in the first place and says the things he does about others being racists. In his entire life he has seen ONE black man and never in one of his own classes.

This village is known for a very efficient police force, as I've
probably mentioned. I can repeat a couple of my favorite incidents, if
anyone's interested.

But still, this entire area has very, very few homeless camps. One year,
a few friends and I decided to ride mountain bikes off-road along the
river, to a down about 25 miles downstream and back. We passed maybe
three or four tents along the river that were obviously "home" to some
folks.

Those are the only ones I recall seeing here, and I've done hiking and
mountain biking in lots of off-the-beaten-path areas. And I've never
seen a news article about homeless camps in our area. I'm sure that if
they exist, they're extremely rare.

Which is beside the main point. If Tom dislikes those (which would be
very understandable) he should stop whining and move. I once lived and
worked in an area I disliked. I found a better job and moved out. He
should do the same.

Last year a friend and I found ourselves in Amsterdam ... New York, near
the end of day, looking for lodging. Now Amsterdam NY, unlike its
namesake, is not nookshotten with cycleways, in fact we didn't see a
one.

What we could see were some of the bright towers of commercial
hospitality, moments work for a flying crow. But we were neither crows
nor motorists, and our way was blocked by a moat of freeway, with
numerous overpasses swooping about. We looked for a reasonable way to
cross, but failed. At one point I convinced my friend to try one of the
overpasses, closed for construction, and we did until he, being the
wiser of the two, rebelled, and we gave up.

So we turned to the wisdom of the interwebs, asking "fleabag near me?",
and found one, not far away. GPS confidently offered to guide us.
After several times being asked to turn where there didn't seem to be
one, we lost faith in GPS and sought human counsel.

One of the few signs of life on our benighted side of town was an
Italian restaurant; we went in and pestered the waitresses. They
took a page from Mr Muzi's store clerks, and seemed ignorant of any of
the local surface streets. Or maybe it was just the dinner rush.

Not long afterwards, we did get some likely sounding directions from a
guy leaving the restaurant. He knew just where we wanted to go, and
understood our limitations in getting there.

The first thing, he told us, was a large hill, and indeed, there was.
I'm sure the slowest of my readers (in climbing, not reading), would
have spun right up it, but, being made of slacker stuff, we were soon
reduced to walking.

It took a while. I can't say how long, but it was quite dark by the time
we got to the top. When we got there, we saw the very same guy, waiting
for us. He had a large, black, diesel pickup, or maybe it was one of
those "tactical" black minivans. He told us he had realized that his
directions were perhaps not sufficiently clear, and thought we might
take a wrong turn, as we almost surely would have. Just turn there, he
said, it's right around the corner. And so it was, or I would be
telling a different story.

I'm not sure what race has to do with it. I see homeless people in all
shades and varieties. The visible ones are mostly men, however, seems
like sexism at work.

I'll try to be a little clearer. Without racial diversity, there's
not likely to be any race riots leaving the police free to run the
homeless beggars off the streetcorners..

Nice.

I recall a similar event in one of our European trips, trying to follow
ever more helpful directions to lodging, but terribly hampered by our
lack of language skills. We got to our hotel eventually but it was by a
sort of spiral path, after about three circuits around.

One of the things you have to understand is that a significant if not majority of the homeless have jobs and try to work like most people. With the Biden, like the Obama, wages nearly nothing compared to the cost of living, they are forced into living in cars or even tents. Beggars may very well be those who cannot find work because homeless, they cannot provide a suitably good appearance.
