There's nothing good to say about that.
In principle, it's just and necessary.

In practice, innocents are executed (incompetence or
malevolence or some mix thereof). Not every day, but one is
plenty enough to give one pause.

Another split between theory and practice.

In California, guys plead up to more serious charges to get
a death sentence because Death Row has larger and nicer
space, much better amenities, better health care etc
compared to a long sentence in general population and an
actual execution is a very remote possibility.

is, of course, the most miserable, constantly complaining about his
surroundings, his finances, his government, his equipment and everything

about the worst and rarest occurrences. Mr. Tricycle has joined that
effort, although he's in this just for the trolling.

Meanwhile, the bulk of contributors to this now diminished discussion
group go though life with no home invasions, no roadside (or pathside)
attacks, no need to be armed while riding, no mentionable financial
distress, no horrible crashes, no slipping handlebars or stretching
cables, and in general no misery.

OTOH, I can offer a schadenfreude opportunity to the dismal few. On
today's ride, we actually were menaced! A black and white dog _really_
didn't like us riding by its owner's lawn! It sort of lunged repeatedly,
teeth bared and snarling. So, so scary! <Sob!> If only, if only I'd had
a handy six shooter! I'd have performed a quick draw and put three slugs
right down it's horrible, horrible throat!

approached. I got my can of dog spray out and gave the dog a small

Put away the dog spray as vicious dogs are a very valuable training
aid. It is amazing how fast you can sprint on a bicycle with a really
vicious dog snapping at your ankles (:-)

<chuckle> But you obviously were afraid... afraid enough to take
defensive action against the poor critter. You're obviously afraid
enough of dogs to carry "dog spray." I've never carried any "dog
spray," never knew such things existed.

Oh yeah, I've had dogs came out and speak to me. Generally they stop
when you speak back to them in a calm, non-aggressive voice.
Aggressive dogs are almost always acting out of fear and as soon as
they realize that you aren't something to be afraid of, they'll
usually behave themselves.

My tactic to deal with aggressive dogs when not out riding is to squat
down, hold out the back of my open hand to them and speak gently. I
believe my position on the Catrike is less threatening then standing
or riding upright.

I think I once swatted at one with my cap. That's a handy, last resort
tactic when you're sitting down low, eye to them, but the thought of
shooting someone's dog is despicable. Shame on you.

Actually, I always regretted hitting that dog in the face with my cap.
It had a metal clasp and I could have put the dog's eye out. Dogs are
not naturally mean. They only get that way when people teach them to
be mean. In the case of a persistent chaser, I should have either
slowed down and stopped, or perhaps squirted it with a water bottle.
My water bottles have a bit of lemon juice added, so that might have
harmlessly stung it's eyes a bit.

I'll trust a dog before I trust a human being stranger.

All my kids, step kids, grandkids, etc, share my feelings about dogs.
Their homes are shared with them, including a Rotweiller, and a
good_lord_massive Great Dane.

Actually, unlike humans no animal is naturally mean. There's only
three reasons an animal will get aggressive. One is because it's
afraid, another is because it's hungry, and the third is because it
wants to mate your lady friend. Dogs don't eat people nor want to bonk
your woman, so unless it's trained to be mean, it's afraid.
