I think that we're in agreement that traffic lights are there for a reason. But now cars are driving at almost full speed through stop signs. If the police have no intentions of enforcing the traffic laws people will simply have no respect at all for the laws. Two blocks from my house is a six way intersection controlled only by signs. This is an extremely dangerous area but people are normally careful. Except for the illegals who don't know the traffic laws beyond what is necessary to get a driver's license. Oddly enough, the illegals that drive commercial trucks are extremely careful but an illegal in a 4 wheel drive with extended tires is as likely to drive in the bike lane as not. The only thing that controls these people is the time it would take to wait for the police to show up and take a report of an "accident." And ALL of the lights around here have cameras so hit and run is out of the question.

Bicyclists that run stop signs when no traffic is present are common but extremely few run red lights.

Early Thursday traffic report was that a 71 year old cyclist
had been run over and killed. Driver stayed at the scene.

Early today report was that the cyclist 'crossed against the
light' which at that intersection is incomprehensibly
irresponsible in morning commute traffic.

One well-known bike advocate I know sometimes refers to it as "Ye
magicke grene painte." Obviously, he's skeptical about its powers, as am I.

Some cyclists interpret green paint as "Ooh, now I'm safe." I tend to
think "Oh cripe, what craziness do I have to deal with now?"
