That's what I was cursing at the screen.

I just turned off the volume for all the PC garbage, beginning a while before
launch. But that's okay, there was plenty of data presented on the side and
bottom of the screen to digest during the flight. No big deal without audio.

made it happen.

It is a big deal to develop the new technology used. The project
developed technology needed

to help get back to the moon and to get to Mars. It's just plain cool!

Fell down with parachutes.

Two seperate pieces came back down. Same as 60 years ago.

Well, I think we have an idea of what can happen over that long. I guess
the future of humankind over this period is likely to be an almost
insignificant event. I know that thought may not please everyone.

There are millions of things that could happen, and an asteroid hitting
Earth is just one of them. Even if nothing that drastic happens - which
granted would be unlikely - we are likely to have self-destructed way
earlier than this (heck, even just a few centuries, or even a few
decades for the most pessimistic, doesn't seem like that impossible at
this point). And if, by any miracle, we have not, we will probably have
evolved into a species that is very different. Humans as they are now
have been there for an insignificant fraction of time compared to the
sun's life, yet we are arrogant enough to think we'll be there forever
unchanged.

Exploration means leaving your comfortable zone and while it
obviously is not appealing to everyone, especially to people who have
not left their comfortable zone for decades, it is *essential* to what
mankind is all about.
Today's launch does not add new capabilities for going up but it
does add some diversity. Had there been only one boat maker in all
Europe a few centuries ago I doubt Columbus would have got anywhere
near the sea let alone America.
Some people have learnt how to make that vehicle which went up today
and these people will be around for another while. Von Braun is not
around any more, other people must do what it takes to carry on.

This continent had air, water, plants, animals, and a human-survivable
climate. And a nice mag field and ionisphere to protect us from
radiation.

Mars has none of that. No infrastructure. No Home Depot stores.
Nothing to drink or breathe. It would be a death sentence, and for no
good reason.

"Space" is hostile to human life. Very.

We couldn't even survive on Antartica without constant outside supply.
Let's build farms and cities there first. It's warmer than Mars.

Exploration is about the unknown. If the Mars venture proves to
be a failure the lessons learnt will eventually get us further to
other targets. This is what mankind has been doing since it came
to existence. "Earth is the cradle of humanity but you cannot
live all your life in the cradle" (my translation, by memory).

What you propose is just doing what we already know and stay in
our comfort zone. Life is not designed to work like that, comfort
zones get deleted one way or the other (even by wiping out a species if
it takes that). Were it not like that we would be still hopping from
one tree to another and enjoy the bananas all day.
