It may amuse John Doe - he's got strange tastes. I suppose some of us might be amused if John Doe tested positive for Covid-19, but he's already tested positive for brain-rot, so it would be pretty much irrelevant.

Ya he and every Fox talking head got vaccinated and now make a career of
telling all the stupos who listen to them not to do it. Asking "how
fucking dumb are these people?" about their fanbase would be a pertinent
question if I didn't already know the answer.

You have to admit the pictures are pretty disturbing, flying without masks, meetings of 20 or more people without masks even the small meeting without masks. Sounds like something Trmp would do. Shows stupidity and arrogance sits on both sides of the isle.

The rest of the video is just Fox appeasing their viewers with sensationalism.

Yes. They abandoned their jobs and packed into a hired plane with lots
of beer and no masks. I suspect that some fibbed about having their
shots.

Trump's Project Warp Speed saved a lot of lives. The europeans didn't
do the vaccine thing as well. Talk doesn't matter; lives do.

Case growth in the UK is shocking. They look to be headed for an
all-time new peak.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/uk/

Spain too.

Sweden is nearly zero new cases.

They made a tactical move to stop the Texan Republicans disenfranchising even more of the people likely to vote for them.

This is doing their jobs, not abandoning them. John Larkin does seem to like Republicans and dislike Democrats, so the snide comments about masks should not be taken too seriously.

It didn't. Trump jumped on that band-waggon long after it had started rolling. The money he put in towards vaccine development was useful, but investors were queuing up to put money in anyway.

> The Europeans didn't do the vaccine thing as well. Talk doesn't matter; lives do.

I wonder what John thinks he means by that. Most of the vaccines are European, and the United States hasn't got as much of its population vaccinated as most European countries.

Boris Johnson has a lot in common with Trump.

The seven-day moving average is 250 out of 10 million people. Australia is having a Covid-19 outbreak, and it has got 103 news cases out of 27 million people. We have locked down half the population to get that number back down to zero.

John Larkin's idea of what constitutes "nearly zero" is a trifle bizarre.

Yeah being a Democrat is a lousy job; always taking shit whenever they
do the same shit Republicans do and their hut hut Roman-salute-throwing
"base" loves them for. It is pretty astonishing anyone signs up for it.

Imagine how many lives could've been saved if he'd applied his great
salesmanship skills to actually selling his own project instead of the
reverse, if that's what it was...

Better to take the stance most Republicans in Congress and Fox

In fact I think the major difference between a successful right-wing

You just don't like Trump. That's feeling, not thinking, and
absolutely normal.

You make up silly stories to ramp up your tribalism. They don't make
sense.

You don't post much electronics either.

Phizer refused to take part in Warp Speed and ended up producing one of
the first effective vaccines. Trump can't claim credit for that. And
Warp Speed was running before Trump got on board - he is never a leader,
he only follows when it looks good. Perhaps he should be called "Hindmost"?

Trump got vaccinated and is now telling his remoras (look it up) to not
get vaccinated.

He is simply a con man. His agenda is not to be what he sees as being a
loser. Like losing an election, losing court appeals. Losing the respect
of most of the world...

What a hoser!

John

That's last year's fake news. Trump was a camera hog,
but an information sphincter. You can't name most of the
real workers on the various solutions, so you pick the
guy who blamed everyone he could think of, loudly
and on-camera. The governor of Washington state
was the first politician to try to grapple the problem (and
has good vaccination stats to show for it) but the Donald
wouldn't even let Pence phone him.

Several states (Tennessee, Florida, New York) are still squabbling
and blame-dodging, in follow-the-leader fashion. It's a disgraceful
fashion.

No. Actually, Pfizer produced nothing, so there was nothing to speed up
to Warp. They did provide the efficiency tests for their distribution
region and pulled the good stuff on bottles in their plant in Belgium,
close to the source. That's it.
The original manufacturer is Biontech in Mainz, Germany with 4 or 5
other plants.

OXAZ was an English/Nordic development and JJ was the first genuine
American product, months later.

When John writes " The europeans didn't do the vaccine thing as well. "
he makes a complete bozo out of himself.
It were the Europeans who delivered first.
And the Chinese, Russians, Indians.

I'm mostly doing SPLC design these days, the GreenPAK devices in
particular. Sadly nobody here seems much interested in 'em except BoB as
I recall so there's not a lot to say about it.

Meanwhile I'm taking this power electronics course online, they have a
decent number of solid EE seminars at this site:

<https://www.coursera.org/specializations/modeling-and-control-of-power-electronics>

Fair weather in New England is too rare to spend it cooped up at the
bench too long if it can be avoided, there's six months of winter for that.

My big problem now is thermal. I want to control the temperature of an
e/o modulator to millikelvins.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/uv2qdezceq08oed/T500_Block_1.jpg?raw=1

A big metal block with heaters is mostly a 1st-order system, so the
control dynamics is simple. Maybe a 15 minute thermal time constant.
But there will be heat losses and gradients everywhere, and I have no
tools to model that.

I guess we'll prototype it and try to measure things. Even that looks
hard.

The modulator has 4 SMA connectors that will add big, unknown
temperature errors.

Isn't "Johnson and Johnson" the one developed by Janssen in The

That's perfectly rational. Liking him is confined to people with fairly advanced cases of irrationality. There do seem to be quite a few of them, but that's the US education system inaction.

> That's feeling, not thinking, and absolutely normal.

John Larkin may be an authority about "feeling". What he knows about "thinking" seems to be confined to watching other people do it.

Thinking that Trump was (and is) a dangerously incompetent egomaniac is entirely normal. If you can't think, you may not be able to come to this conclusion.

Somebody who "thinks" that anthrogenic global warming isn't happening, and wouldn't be a problem if it were happening, clearly isn't good at thinking.

People have been doing that sort of thing for quite a while now.

https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/0957-0233/7/11/015/meta

which got published in 1996, includes a list of references to people who had done better than a millikelvin. Phil Hobbs has a copy.

It gets easier if you can bury the e/o modulator in insulation (light path excepted, obviously, but that seems to be defined by optical fibres if I read you sketch correctly).

> A big metal block with heaters is mostly a 1st-order system, so the

Not entirely. There's always a lag between the heaters and temperature sensor, and the heat generated in resistive heaters is proportional to square of the voltage you apply to them or the current you put through them. Peltier junctions are more linear, but the constant of proportionality varies with the temperature difference across them.
MOSFets can be more linear, if you keep track of the current actually flowing through them (and any current-limiting resistor you put in series with them).

> But there will be heat losses and gradients everywhere, and I have no tools to model that.

Of course you do.
> I guess we'll prototype it and try to measure things. Even that looks hard.

We prototyped and measured. It took a while, but it wasn't difficult, if a bit tedious.
> The modulator has 4 SMA connectors that will add big, unknown temperature errors.

Until you measure what they do. They are just a couple more routes for heat to flow between the modulator and its environment. Your aluminium block isn't going to be floating in mid-air - it's got to be located. You can't just hang the whole thing off the optical fibres.

One loop and two heaters on the bottom seems kinda crude to stabilize to
millikelvins. Can you use the FETs for gross adjustment and maybe
Peltiers on the top or sides for faster fine control?

You can wrap a fine control loop inside a coarse control loop operating
on two state variables, a lil infrared camera might work for the coarse
adjustment a la : <https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/8801902>

The real issue is making the sensor truly represent the temperature of
the mach-zender elements inside the EOM, so we can feed back on that.
At millikelven level, nothing practical is isothermal.

There is a 20 GHz electrical path from the SMAs to the internal
lithium niobate bits, and anything that conducts electricity well also
conducts heat well. A hardline coax is a pretty good thermal antenna.

Really good OCXOs use a double oven. That's a good if expensive idea,
except for the hardlines drooling in ambient changes.

We might temperature regulate an SMA bulkhead feedthru, sort of a
thermal bootstrap.

None that he's aware if.

It isn't. Merely tedious.

You don't have to. People had stabilised down to a few micro-kelvins in the 1970's with single lop controillers. It helps to have a well-insulted blob to start with.

> The real issue is making the sensor truly represent the temperature of the mach-zender elements inside the EOM, so we can feed back on that.

You might want to add a second sensor. Phil Hobbs is a full bottle on that.

> At millikelven level, nothing practical is isothermal.

It there's no heat flowing through a thermal resistance, there isn't any temperature difference. Good external insulation helps there.

There's much less difference in thermal conductivity between metals and non-metals than there is in electrical conductivity.

It isn't an expensive idea. Ovens are cheap.

Sounds very sensible.

Why bother? Thermistors are cheap.
