I remember in around 1970 a lecturer from the local university giving a
talk at my school about the dangers of Lead in petrol. At that age, we
were mostly more concerned with other things, often trouser-related, but
had little choice in the matter.

He was Professor Bryce-Smith - I do remember that he came across as very
keen and sincere. Of course, my father dismissed it all as nonsense.

PNAS is a high impact publication, and it gets edited by the relevant member of the US National Academy of Sciences, so charlatans's are pretty thin on the ground.

On the other hand, there was Diederich Stapel
