As I was getting the Catrike ready for yesterdays ride I noticed
several green strips on my left front tire. I use Schwalbe Marathon
Green guard tires and the green strips mean that some of the tread has
worn down into the 1/8 inch thick puncture protection layer. Unlike
when the tread is worn down into the fabric, the tire is still very
usable, so I topped off the pressure and went ahead with my ride.
Afterwards, there was even more green showing, but the right tire had
none. The left front always wears down first , but the right will soon
follow. When I order new front tires I always get a pair and replace
both when they arrive. That way, the right tire becomes a spare, and
today I'll use one of my spares to replace the left tire.

I should have recorded when I put that pair on, but I didn't. It
didn't seem like all that many miles ago, but time flies. At any rate,
I'll go ahead and check the alignment, since that's the primary reason
for tires to wear out before their time.

Since your tire sizes are not easy to come by besides replacing the entire set I would suggest that you buy a spare set and keep them on the shelf in the garage.

They're actually very easy to buy. I bought the two 20 inchers
directly from Schwalbe. The 26 on the back looks pretty good, and I
have a pretty good spare.

You're 20x1.125 or 20x1.5 right? If so, they are a popular
item in 100psi Kenda and available anywhere.

If you use Strava you can use it to log miles of parts, for example my
front tire on the commute bike has done just shy of 7K but rear only
400miles as it got a side wall slash!

Also useful for disk pads as they can be awkward to check but if you know
how long they generally last can keep an eye on them as they approach that
point!

I use 406x1.5 on the front and 559x1.5 on the rear. I settled on
Schwalbe Marathon Originals (HS420) long ago for their low rolling
resistance, hi puncture protection and durability, and reasonable
price. They are availble at many on line places. Today I bought them
directly from Schwalbe, willing to pay a few bucks more for shipping
than from Amazon. I dislike Amazon.

My record low was less than one mile before a broken bottle destroyed a
new tire. That was at night before my headlights were much good.

Thanks, I'll do that.

Luckily I found the reciept for my last tire purchase. It was August
of 2021, so I have somewhere around 3000 miles on these tires, which
is about normal.

I did check the alignment and it was off a tiny bit, probabably due to
wear on the headsets. I tightened them down a few weeks ago. I set the
alignment right again, however it was not off enough to effect tire
wear. Catrike recommends a tiny bit of toe in. I prefer them to be
dead on and I've never had a problem with tracking.

What happens if you have a damaged memory like mine and keep forgetting how to get into Strava?

That’s annoying! luckily BigApples are cheap £20 ish as they don’t have a
reinforced sidewalls which is why they ride so much better than the
Marathons

To be fair it’s the only side wall I’ve had fail I presumable must of being
banking over somewhat!

Broken glass is pretty common in the gutter by the bike lanes. I had
trouble with glass and tire wire riding the bridges down in the
keys... but then I have three tracks to keep out of trouble while the
two-wheelers only have one.

+1

A brand new Clement silk 250 once in the parking lot before

Another reason to opt for good headlights--it saves your tires.

<https://www.gaciron.com/V9D-1800bule.php> is the one I've been
recommending. A little pricey at about $81
<https://www.aliexpress.com/i/2251832765864253.html> but well-made with
a very good beam pattern. and extra mounts are readily available. Really
like the DRL which "breathes" instead of flashing.

Only if you ride at night. Bicycle headlights are annoying on the bike
trail during the day.

Pass word manager, works for me as I don’t have enough memory to remember 4
digit codes, and am well off the bell curve for memory/attention.

Did you not get any assessments after? I had over a month of assessments ie
IQ tests but more so and others and then rehabilitation in areas they
thought they could help with.

I've found in my advancing age that I'm having a tougher time mounting and
dismounting tires by hand. I have lately been using tire irons to get them
off for flat repairs and been able to get them back on by hand okay.

I may have to use some magic words that you guys would not know to make it
happen, but I can usually succeed.

I'm curious if the smaller rims on the catrike (20 inch?) are easier or
harder to get the casing on and off.

I know brand makes a lot of difference...I've never used a Schwalbe so far
but it's on my list of brands to try.

I also kind of limit myself since I stick to 27" tires....but what are we
cyclists here but a bunch of stubborn individualists! (Huzzah!)

I recall that Peter White Cycles had a lot of good articles on bike lights.
Took a quick look, looks like they still do.

https://www.peterwhitecycles.com/

Since I've retired I'm a whol lot less concerned with bike lights.

I use my Fenix Pro (I think...all the lettering has worn off) as my
favourite around the house flashlight--we live in the country and use
flashlights at night routinely) as my general go-to light. It uses a single
LiIon 18650 cell.

I had mounted an "opticube" light on the back of my helmet since I wanted to
use my pile or rechargeable AA batteries and it seemed that all bike lights
were moving to AAA batteries and I have a single AA battery using headlight
--Fenix HL--on the front of my helmet (Ooops, I said the 'H' word.)

I also had a Vistalite on my bike rack and often wore my Belt Beacon
(touring model, 40 flashes/minute vs. 60 for the std.).

One of the big reasons I can't stand cities (eg: Santa Cruz) is that people
feel that they are free to help themselves to your property and it sure gets
old taking everything on and off and schlepping it w/ one's pannier...

Ooops, I'm ranting. Signing off, now.

They're easier to put on and take if you warm them up. I let them sit
in the sun for a while before I started, but still I could never do it
without tire irons.. I also use a special tool to mount them.

LOL, I still have two Belt Beacons. They still work. Not the greatest in
terms of bulbs.

That is true. Santa Cruz is especially bad. My daughter went to UCSC and
bicycled a lot there, including going up that hill every day once she
lived off campus. Stuff got stolen off her bicycle when she locked it at
Trader Joe's. But she made it all four years without her whole bicycle
being stolen.

I've had good headlights for many, many years. That incident was never
