I am trying to buy a live center for my Dalton lot 2 Lathe. The stamping on my on dead center is marked MT 2. My drill chuck also has a MT2 stamping. When I order from Amazon the MT2 Live Centers, it doesn’t fit. I tried several manufactures, and none fit, they are all too loose. If someone knows what I am doing wrong please help. Here are my measurements:

Drill Chuck
..750 Large end
..610 Small end
2.266 Shank Length

Dead center
..725 large end
..585 small end
4.185 Length

Tailstock MT Spindle Shaft
..722 Hole Bore
..125 Key Grove
1.125 Diameter
6.010 Length

It sounds like you don't have a standard Morse taper. A quick search
engine check on-line says the big end of an MT2 is about .700 and a #3
is much larger at 0.938. I just looked at my copy of Machinery's
Handbook and it says 0.700 and 0.938 respectively at the gage line, so
the Internet is right.

Your options may include to make your own tapers to fit, make or modify
a tail stock barrel that works with a standard Morse taper, or find out
if your lathe used some other taper and hope there is tooling still
available in that form.

You might see if somebody like Vintage Machinery has any more
information on your lathe.
http://vintagemachinery.org/mfgIndex/detail.aspx?id=2756

Also lathes.co.uk if I recall may have some information.
http://www.lathes.co.uk/dalton/page2.html

Here is an owners group you might also check out.

If someone reamed the spindle bore to a different taper the large and small
end ODs may not match a standard but the taper per inch should. You can
determine it from the insertion depth of cylinders of known diameter, such
as ground drill rod, or two different sized washers on threaded rod, with
their separation adjusted to fit the bore without play, preferably near both
ends.

There's a nice old book here with diagrams and measurements for Morse
tapers and others that may help🤷

Is it possible that he has the tailstock ram retracted to the point
that the live centre is being ejected by the ram feed screw - the tip
on the small end of the taper may be a little longer than on the other
items. I have some home made shanks where the tip is not long enough
(I made them a long time ago!)

I made that mistake once. A little blob of MIG weld on the end fixed it.

The OP e-mailed me that it might be Jarno #6, and I sent a link to a center
on eBay.

My mill has a B&S #7 taper which is hard to find.
