What did you expect when you dropped a circular Mason (Kerr) jar lid into a cone? The Mason jar lid would settle in a position perpendicular to the axis of the cone. What the hell does that prove?

Try cutting out an accurate ellipse and drop that into a cone.

By the way, the original Archimedes knew this well: that the ellipse is in fact a conic section.
