Well, there's a lot in what he says. Full suspension bikes are really heavy and there's no way to make them light without also making them dangerous. But a 29 inch wheel is really nothing more than a wider 700c and 27.5" wheels are a 600b. Depending on your height either one actually improves the handling of full suspension bikes. MTBs started out using Schwinn 26" tires which did not handle well at all. So it was easy to improve them with larger tires.

What the fellow says, that larger wheels don't turn well is perhaps true in a classroom, but controlling factor is that in the sort of off-the-blacktop situation he has in mind, the bigger wheel is less disturbed by irregular surfaces, and therefore turns and tracks more securely. And that, as the screeching monkeys will now insist, is when we change wheel size and hold the rims and tyres steady. In fact, as I've been saying for years, the full effect of the 29-incher is harvested with wide rims and wide low pressure tyres, which all add to security and predictability of control at speed on any surface.

Given on the authority of a dozen years on 60mm Schwalbe Big Apples on 24mm (bead to bead) rims as the bike's only suspension besides a Brooks twin-rail saddle.
