Excellent suggestion. I believe it was Mao who remarked the US was
uninvadable because there was "a gun behind every blade of grass" and
the Swiss citizenry is required by law to keep firearms at home for
the defence of the realm.

The Swiss situation is different. The citizens have had military training, and actually know how to use their - military - weapon. They look a lot more like a well-regulated militia than do American gun nuts.

The war wasn't pointless until they'd managed to find and kill Bin Laden. After that, it became a game of whacka mole . They weren't prepared to spend enough money to actually root out the Taliban, or educate the Afghan population to the point where a substantial majority could see that the religious right need to be disarmed and restrained - the Americans haven't managed to get there with their own religious right wing, so they weren't going to spend billions trying to do something in Afghanistan that they hadn't managed at home.

Cursitor Doom doesn't seem to be religious - he does have his irrational delusions which are no less silly than those adopted by better-organised believers, so his wagers seem even less likely to pay off.

Trump invented himself. The Koch brothers were looking for a right-wing populist to take over what their Tea Party Faction had left of the Republican Party, and Trump was better at public relations than the Republican clowns that had been willing to play along with the Tea Party.

The kind of political skills that are required to sell that kind of right-wing nonsense to a lot of people as silly as John Larkin are fairly rare. The people who can manage it can't have a particularly good grasp of reality, but once they've got to the top pf a large organisation they can do a lot of damage.
