From 1922, they used a 10 digits calculator FACIT. It was incredible, even slow to use, until it was replaced worldwide
around 1975, when TI and HP electronic calculators took over. Pitifully, electronic calculators only provided with 8 decimal
digits and less with floating point, when it come out by the end of the '70s.

And general purpose CPUs/FPUs and their limitations are perfectly fine
for 95% of usage. Yet mathematics is abstract, and many of its theorems
need infinite precision. Notice in many integrations (even EE stuff
like Fourier and Laplace transformations) have one integration limit as
infinity. Not 10^15, infinity. The number 0.999... requires an infinite
number of '9' digits to be equal to 1.

Did you know that an ordinary computer cannot represent 0.1 exactly in
binary? (Well you can with an infinite number of bits as binary
digits...) 95% of usage, this doesn't matter. Can you figure out why
this is so? (hint: 1/3 cannot be represented exactly as a decimal
number, at least not without an infinite number of decimal digits)

The relevance of this is...? If the instruction set includes the likes
of sines/cosines and exponentiation/logarithms (x86 FPU FYL2X/FYL2XP1)
as part of the base instruction set (not as an API/library function),
then yes, otherwise no. Not all computers, especially older ones, have
such instructions.

If the instruction set doesn't have firmware instructions, then library
routines certainly do. Or they use faster algorithms that mathematicians
have created. Sometimes lookup tables.

I do system level programming of an operating system. Not too long ago I
had to implement a square root algorithm in integer math. Quite unusual
for that type of work. I could not call library code from that mode, nor
did that CPU have built-in square root instructions, I wrote my own.

I found a similar mechanical calculator at a garage sale. I don't know

To make a division, you had to turn around a handle clockwise and counter-clockwise until you got zero residuals.
Iron pumping was easier. NCR built electromechanical calculators of 100 Kg. to the least. You had to press a button
and run away because it was noisy as hell (circa 1960).

It was used for refrigeration where propane or some other heat source
was available but electricity wasn't.

Even today, RVs have propane refrigerators. (I don't know if they use

It just needs a heat source. As I said (and Richard ignored), off-grid
propane refrigerators are used in RVs etc. Also commercial buildings in
New York City use steam (from power plants) to power air conditioning in
them.

Maybe if I get bored, I'll look up the design of propane RV
refrigerators and/or steam A/C systems and compare them to the
Szilard/Einstein design.

Enrico Fermi died from cancer on November 28, 1954, after years of exposure between 1941 and 1946? (nuclear pile work).
He was a "hands on" person, as well as theoretical physicist.

From June 2 to 4, 1947, the first international physics conference after World War II was held at Shelter Island.
The conference brought together 24 physicists from the Manhattan Project, including:

Wheeler
Oppenheimer
All of these scumbags (they were willingly working on a genocidal project) were theoretical physicists, calculalists and
administrators, very far away from the labs. Check how many were "conscience objectors". Teller accused Oppenheimer
for holding him back from development of the H-bomb, during the McCarthy hearings in 1954. After 1945 and Oppenheimer
gone, he got the job to develop the first 2 Megatons H-Bomb, detonated on November 1, 1952 at the Pacific Marshall Islands.

So, Teller managed to develop means to kill 100 more people than Oppenheimer (about 2 millions/H-bomb). And he survived
to be Reagan's advisor and his killer X-rays laser proposal. He died on September 9, 2003 (aged 95). So, devil pays well.

Check how many of the experimental physicists lived 10 years more after WWII. You'll find difficult to find their names.
