I don't believe that Mark Twain wrote Taming a Bicycle in 1850 as it
is clear that he learned to ride a bicycle in 1884. He stated that "He
and his friend Joseph Twichell took lessons from a German employee
from the nearby Columbia bicycle factory in Hartford."

The Columbia bicycle factory seems to have manufactured bicycles from
1878.
