Lovely to see news of the telescope's deployment that makes a difference whereas on the surface, they are talking about military deployment in Europe.

Now, more than ever, a world needs genuine astronomy and people with courage to show humanity more expansive perspectives of the planet we inhabit , its position in the solar system, galaxy and wider structures when they are found.

Hmm, what happened to Star Wars, actually?! We now know of
thousands of exo-planets, are there any plans to invade them?

Colonization, Galactic Empire formation, all those nice plans,
described in so many books already, it seems just a matter
of taking action now!

Ours will be the the center of the Empire of course!

Exactly! No need to stop at just one Galaxy..

Before we can draw up such plans, we would first have to have
some means of getting _to_ them.

And, really, now: if there were intelligent beings on other planets,
and just after inventing our first interstellar spacecraft, we thought
to go out and... annoy... the people living on other planets, would we
not quickly find out that there are many other intelligent races who
have had interstellar spacecraft for a very long time, and thus have...
improved their performance characteristics?

However, there may be _unoccupied_ explanets which we could
settle without violating the rights of any alien beings; what would be
wrong with that?

As far as "what happened to Star Wars", well, there _is_ Kathleen
Kennedy. Or, if you mean the Strategic Defense Initiative, that has
nothing to do with planets in other solar systems.

And, furthermore, the James Webb Space Telescope was launched
by the *United States of America*!

Now, I know if you go far enough back into its distant past, one can
find some regrettable episodes involving countries like Guatemala.

But the United States is a democracy; its military strength has not gone
into conquest, but into defending the peaceful countries against which
tyrants try to commit aggression!

Look at how it saved Europe in two World Wars. How, in the Cold War,
it kept the Soviet Union from extending its power beyond Eastern Europe.
How it defended South Korea, and attempted to defend South Vietnam,
from invasion.

In fact, just look at today's headlines - where the United States is
opposing (but perhaps not firmly enough) the threats Russia is making
against the Ukraine, which had the temerity to overthrow a dictator who
was one of Putin's cronies.

So that's settled then! They already have Elon Musk, and we know the
current US president's strong preference for military engagement, so
watch out Aliens: they're coming!

President of the United States
Current officeholder:
Joseph Robinette Biden

He doesn't look like a militaristic warmonger during his televised
appearances.

Of course, the United States is currently dealing with two adversaries,
Russia and China, who are both engaged in making military threats
against democratic countries - the Ukraine and Taiwan respectively -
from which it appears nothing short of the threat of military force will
deter them. However, I fail to see how that's the fault of the United
States.

How about a war of memes? Send them the Republican platform, along
with a bunch of manipulative one-liners. They might then destroy
themselves without our needing to get there at all!
