The Curie temperature of iron exposes that the core is not acting as a permanent magnet.
Another fascinating feature of the magnetic field is that it would rather not travel through air.
If it could stay in an iron layer it would much rather do so. I naively suggest that possibly the core magnet is a south pole at the north pole; a shell at the surface carries the return field as a rough torus circulation yielding the ordinary north pole as leakage to the air; sort of like a keeper. Of course it also has to be said that the north pole of your compass is actually a south pole as well, or if you like to keep your compass needle as north then the north pole is the south pole of the magnet, with an embedded north pole beneath it. Edit earlier language to your liking but please remain consistent.

How's that for reversal? It is a great topic Mitch. Pretty sure it is an open problem.
