Garmin drives me crazy. Today I went out on a 1,400 foot climb and 28 miles. Coming home I plugged it into the desktop and there was no data there. This is the second or third time that has happened and I don't deviate from the set pattern.

In Garmin Connect, Sunday is the last ride shown. It worked fine while I was riding so how did it dump the data without recording it?

‘How did it dump the data without recording it’ what does that mean? What is not recorded can’t be uploaded. If the ride is recorded there is a possibility that you didn’t save it and the recorded data is lost on your device so there is nothing to be uploaded. If it is saved it will be visible in the hystory on your device. There still can be issues when uploading (PC issues, Garmin server down) but the data is still on your device.

I turned the timer off, walked into the house and plugged it into the desktop as usual. I didn't look at the results for an hour which is a bit unusual but that shouldn't have had any effect on the data. When I did look there was no Tuesday ride.

Most likely you didn’t start it! Which is surprising easy to do!

When I pause the timer (you don't stop it) I see the intermediate results (distance, time, average speed and elevation gain) and I have three choices: discard, save and resume the timer/ride (pressing the pause button again). If I save the ride I can see the summary of that ride in different categories. Returning to the home screen I can acces the history (rides and totals) and the saved ride shows up in the rides. I have a 1030 but as far as I know the 830 works the same. I have my Garmin crash during a ride or run out of battery but I never lost the data of the ride.

In the activity settings under Timer start-modus you can choose between; manual, on request or auto. Manual you have to press the button, on request the unit asks you if it should start the timer based on detected movement and auto it starts the timer automatically when movement is detected.

Unfortunately the Edge units display speed. And will navigate without
starting the timer! Which I do think is a system failure than user error.

so on my two units I have the timer display somewhere, on the old 520 it’s
on the main screen so I can see I’ve started, on the 830 it’s on another
screen so I do need to check which 99% of the time I do!

It’s the same Interface though the 830 and 530 plus the 130/1030+ come with
a significant faster CPU

I have once on a much older unit had a corrupted file that I couldn’t do
anything with.

The 840/540 has dropped today or yesterday and matches the 1040 so
interface has changed somewhat though very much mild update really.

Right, in the last 2 weeks, I have managed to 'not start tracking' on my
wrist watch twice, one walk (no record) and one bike ride (track on
mobile phone was started sucessfully without HRM data).

If you have the gadget on your handle bar, you can usually see
immediately when it does not display any speeds (unless your bicycling
glasses don't allow you to read the data on the gadget).

It was started and recorded the ride. I stopped it at the end of the ride, got the usual red square meaning it had stopped recording and walked into the house and plugged it directly into the desktop. If you do not start it properly the Garmin will not show mileage and climbing.

When you start any of the Edge series I have, it puts a green arrow on the screen for a bit and shows the mileage changing which it will not do it the timer is off. I don't know anything about the wristwatches.

After you see the red square you still have to save the ride.

I can recommend 'SuperCycle' on Android for most needs (I believe the
bike computer has some additional features like displaying the gradient
of a planned course that are not available on a smartphone).

Or like I have always done in the past - record the readings on paper before plugging it into the desktop. Once is a curiosity, twice could be something I'm doing wrong. But the third time I am positive I did everything correct. So this was somehow the fault of Garmin. They did just recently update their software yet again.

You have to plug it in to charge it anyway so why set it up for WiFi and then have to worry if your phone battery is up?

Your phone has nothing to do with it.

It has really good battery life what 16 hrs and charges up in what a hr or
so at least with a higher power adapter, computer USB ports tend to be low
power.

Short answer is it’s largely simple, hit save it generally automatically
syncs, I charge it up I guess every other ride or so, even 7/8hr rides it’s
has plenty left so no need to charge it up it’s likely to outlast me in
terms of ride length.

I expect that there is an app for your phone that does everything a Garmin does and I will now consider that.

possibly is if he has Garmin connect app though seems not to have as far as
I’m aware?

I find the connectivity useful though does increase batter drain on the
phone. Ie get texts and so on. Which I can ignore or stop and respond to
mostly the first!

The desktop doesn't have access to WiFi so it would have to go through the phone. All of my computer components are hard wired. The only thing on WiFi is the TV.

The 830 doesn’t need a computer bar for map updates which are what 1 or 2
times a year.

So if you have WiFi the 830 will happily sync over that, I have connected
mine to my phone but it doesn’t need to be as long as there is WiFi I can
use it will use that.

Garmin is bit old school in that you need the computer for map updates,
Wahoo and hammerhead are much more phone connected/stand alone device.

Indeed though if it crashes/runs out of power does seem to auto save?

But possibly if plugged in to the computer though why Tom does this? As the
830 will upload rides via WiFi or connected phone no need to plug in to the
computer bar occasionally for map update.

But I guess if not saved and then plugged in it might go to disk mode
before saving? It certainly shouldn’t just dump the file really.

Adding a Wi-Fi card or USB dongle to a desktop is a fairly trivial
exercise. So, how do you connect to the internet with your desktop?
Dialup via a POTS phone line?

Here the most common method of accessing the Internet is through a
Wi-Fi connection. The "Internet Company" comes to the house and
installs a wi-fi transmitter/Receiver in one room and every thing in
the house has access. (well assuming that they have the password :-)
